I'm glad that he didn't. Why? Because I can't picture Buffy telling Angel and one of the things that pissed me off the most about that entire incident was how everyone felt perfectly happy telling everyone else what had happened.

It seemed like such a major violation and betrayal of trust, in particular Xander shoving it in Dawn's face out of spite. He had no business telling Buffy's 14 year old sibling what had happened. It wasn't his place and he was never, ever called on it. And then he had the gall to slam Buffy with it again the next season as if she'd somehow forgotten!

My apologies for the rant, but that is something that has always really infuriated me about how the whole situation was handled. It's one thing to provide a protective environment, it's something else entirely to take that choice away from Buffy and to tell the world without her prior consent.

Though if Angel had found out, I'm not sure he'd have had much of a leg to stand on. Angelus' behavior towards Buffy was terrible as well and I wouldn't have put it past him for an instant to have raped Buffy himself if he'd had the chance.

yeah but Angelus =/- Angel

agree with the rest tho.

Angelus isn't Angel because he didn't have his soul. Spike didn't have his soul either when he tried to rape Buffy. I don't think we can excuse the actions of one while condemning the other when they were both in the exact same situation.

d.a.

This. Spike without a soul eventually behaved way better than Angelus. Spike, while still soulless, eventually became at least partly a hero. Angelus was never anything but evil. There's no comparison.

Yeah, well Spike and Buffy were throwing each other through walls, beating the crap out of each other as foreplay while Spike was un-souled. I guess he gets the Angelus-pass too then.

Now what is short, blonde, and abusive's excuse since she did have one?

(Anonymous) 2011-01-26 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Spike was a soulless vampire, she would have been well within her rights to kill him, so I guess he should count himself lucky.

It's not a matter of excuses. They both fucked up.

I thought that was one of the more interesting points of S6, actually; the Big Bad turned out to be someone just as souled as anyone else whereas Spike, sans soul, sought out a way to ensure that he couldn't ever do anything to hurt Buffy like that again and was judged by the criteria of someone who was souled already.

It also felt like a point was being made to compare Buffy's actions with Spike's. He tried to rape her but the time that she beat the crap out of him and left him for dead was treated with nearly the same degree of condemnation and had a similar impact on her actions, with Buffy realizing how far she'd gone and taking steps to prevent it from happening again.

...but the time that she beat the crap out of him and left him for dead was treated with nearly the same degree of condemnation and had a similar impact on her actions, with Buffy realizing how far she'd gone and taking steps to prevent it from happening again.

And what steps did she take, exactly? IIRC, she didn't take any.

[identity profile] ginzai.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Buffy wasn't as openly apologetic about it and didn't precisely attempt to make amends, but she recognized that her behavior was wrong and that she was mistreating Spike. That's why she called it off. She was disgusted with how she was behaving and tried to take action to prevent it from happening again. Since she didn't blame Spike for how she'd behaved and since it had a lingering (if subtle) impact on the rest of the season, I thought it was pretty meaningful.

[identity profile] ms-scarletibis.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
No...sadly she didn't. She called it off once Riley came into town and shamed her about it. She called it off, and said to him not that she was treating him horribly and that she was sorry for what she'd done, but that it was killing her. She had selfish and self centered motivations for calling it off--it didn't have anything to do with her treatment of him. Later, to throw more salt on that wound, she tells him his feelings aren't even real, and he therefore, doesn't matter.

And if she feels that way about it, then that absolves her for all that she'd done. Spike doesn't matter, and therefore what she did, wasn't wrong.

In addition to that, in "Never Leave Me," Spike points out that yes, she used him. And what does she do? Fold her arms defensively in a "so what?" manner and says, "Yeah--I used you." That's not what someone who was sorry for their actions does. That's quite the opposite.
