Yeah, shitty ones with no funding whatsoever.

they still have books in 'em

What many poor neighbourhoods don't have is parents that teach their kids to read in the first place, or good enough schools to do so.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
that is indeed a problem

(Anonymous) 2011-01-27 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
That is UTTER BULLSHIT. The poor parents who come to my neighborhood library work hard at getting their kids to learn to read. I have never met one parent, not a single one, who didn't want their kids to be literate or do well in school. Sometimes they've got barriers more affluent parents don't, especially barriers of language or health or their own illiteracy. But they're sure as hell trying.

"The poor parents who come to my neighborhood library work hard at getting their kids to learn to read."

I don't doubt this. I really don't. And I'm glad there are people like you to put up the good fight. But what about all the people who don't come to the library? Who wouldn't even dream of it? They form a significant majority, and that's not bullshit. I grew up poor as well, so I should know.

That also happens across class lines. Some people just shouldn't be parents. It doesn't matter if they have money to burn or nothing at all.

[identity profile] cephiedvariable.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
lol okay.

As someone who grew up beneath the proverty line I can assuredly tell you that books were pretty much the only thing that my mother's lack of money did not effect. No cable, sometimes very little food, but hundreds and hundreds of books in the house. Most used book stores sell classics for like a dollar. I think I paid three bucks for a copy of The Brothers Karamazov when I was thirteen.

Your classism is showing. While it's true that working class parents are often busier and more stressed out than middle and upper class parents, making the blanket assumption that they're more neglectful in regards to their child's education and interests is kind of ignorant and insulting.

Not denying there's an element of classism here, but many classics are actually available for free online. Still presumes access to a computer with internet connection, but yeah, you're not dependend on shitty libraries.
