Good for you OP. Life's too short to read books you don't like and get nothing out of. When I was ten I was reading Animorphs and Everworld and loving it, and learning to love reading can lead to a much better relationship with literature down the road than slogging through classics you can't stand that make you and to swear off books forever.

Shannon Hale, who writes some very nice YA fantasy, says it all much better than I do.

Blerg! This is actually the link I meant to post, although the above one is good too:

Except that the primary goal of reading in school isn't to entertain the pupils, but to familiarise them with the literary works that changed the way literature was written.

They don't teach Shakespeare because it's such a hoot to read plays in Early Modern English. It can be debated for months and years whether it is the school's job to teach kids that reading is more fun than video games, but there you have it.

Is it? I thought it was to teach students to think critically about what they read and to understand the craft of writing, which can be accomplished with more accessible books.

You can also teach the historical significance of Moby Dick and show Melville's use of metaphor with a few well chosen excerpts rather than forcing tenth graders to read the whole freaking book.

Also when Shakespeare wrote it was in the modern vernacular of the time, performed quickly and easily understood by his audiences, so why not watch it as a play or read the manga?

Reader awareness is important, but great literary works often leave marks far beyond their initial existence as "was real popular in the day" because of how they show up, directly and indirectly, in later generations. I'm not arguing against any of what you're saying, though, (Shakespeare wasn't even meant to be read in the first place). I'm just pointing out that the essay was written by someone who seemed to have misunderstood the purpose of her English classes.

I could not agree more with the bit about Shakespeare. I'm all for exposing kids to some awesome plays, pity that the school system is to puritanical to actually talk about all the sex and violence in the plays and striping them of any life.

This is relatively unrelated, but I like showing it around whenever Shakespeare comes up: http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-701

What is that from? I looked over the FAQ and am not totally sure what it's about. Ether way I have a powerful need to write a Doctor Who audio play about it....
