Actually, with regards to the sparkling, I don't remember if it's actually in the book or if it's just a bit of fanwanking, but it's supposed to stun humans into just kind of staring at the vampire before he/she goes in for the kill, which also allegedly explains how "attractive" they are.

Now what I don't get is the cold, hard, marble skin.

That makes a little more sense than any explanation I'd come up with, but it still seems an odd thing for a creature to have developed.

Well, impenetrable/hard skin would be a good thing, defense-wise, but the coldness doesn't make sense. And the marble is probably just ~purple prose~.

Well, since they're not exactly a separate species that evolved like, say, humans did, I can give a little leeway: initially they're humans, and then vampirism is transmitted through the bite of another vampire, who was likewise a human turned by another vampire biting them. Vampires don't (usually) have children, so it's not like can pass on traits or mutations to make vampires that survive better. It's really more like a virus than anything.
