It was an honest question. I recall reading both (although now that I think about it I suppose there was a modern English translation along side the original text). I thought it was part of the standard high school curriculum, and found it fascinating. They really should do that in schools.

I guess I must have gone to a pretty awesome high school, judging by what others have said about their experiences with the classics:(

One of my favorite English-class-memories was listening to a recorded version of Beowulf in the Old English. You should seek out a reading if you have the time... it's sooooo pretty, even though you don't understand the words, you can almost feel the meaning.

It's not where I went to school unless you took British Literature, since the seniors in my high school had a choice of English classes.

Also, unless you specifically study it, hardly anybody knows Old English since it's almost nothing like English today.

We had both of those in High School (Michigan). Although we didn't do ALL of the Cantbury Tales because they were a bit racy for our conservative area. But it was Old English and the translations side by side.

Doesn't count. First off I said to anon to come back when they could read Beowulf in Old English, not a translation of it into modern day English, and second of all, The Canterbury Tales are in Middle English, not Old English.

I also also read those in high school, but that's because I specifically took British Literature.

Isn't that what Beowulf is in old English? I honestly don't see any resemblance to English there, what does it say?
(Not trying to be sarcastic, honest question, this stuff was alongside the modern English translation I had to read for English and I tried deciphering it but I've never even seen some of those characters before.)

That's Old English, otherwise known as Anglo-Saxon. Old English bears little resemblance to Modern English. Middle English -- i.e., Chauser's original language -- comes closer and is somewhat comprehensible to the modern speaker, but Old English is a West Germanic language and was heavily influenced by Norse languages, if I recall correctly. (I'm no philologist, nor a student of Old English, it's just a passing interest.) However, once you learn the structures of it and accustom to it, it starts to really make sense. Most collegiate-level students can learn to read basic Old English in a term, and many can grasp most of Beowulf in that span of time as well.

I would be very surprised (and jealous) if you actually read it in high school.

Wait, when I took ENG11-AP at our school, we totally had a version of Beowulf that had both the original text and the translation in it and we spent a whole class listening to/attempting to read the Old English. o_O

Maybe that was just a Mr. Woodley thing?
