I haven't seen that movie so I can't comment. When I said I think Ghibli is overrated I was talking about some fans who worship everything the studio produces. Obviously there might be exceptions.

Grave of the Fireflies is definitely not for children, although I had to watch it as a child for Japanese Culture class. Now it's been almost a decade since I've last seen the film, it is about two children who struggle with leukemia during the World War II bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan. They go through various difficulties and abuse and struggle to stay alive. I can't remember much, but perhaps the most horrifying scenes from that film was the older brother being abused by I can't remember whom, and the scene where a bunch of bodies were rotting away and maggots were eating the dead flesh. Yeah. If there was a Disney film that is equivalent to this, then I'd have to say the controversial Song of the South, but I don't think that film had gore in it.

Nitpick:

-Grave of the Fireflies happened in Kobe, Japan. It wasn't the A-bomb that rained down on their city, it was fire bombs.

-The two kids didn't get leukemia. The little girl died of malnutrition and the boy followed soon after, dying of starvation.

The brother got beaten up by a man from whom he was stealing vegetables from.
