1. True. But it does affect those who are constantly ignored - women, non-whites, lower class. Why, as a working class woman, should I accept that only privileged men can write what we consider "best of literature"?
Why should I always read a book after book after book about male experience, especially since sexism is so common in these works?
Women and men think in different ways. That alone is a reason for any smart woman to not accept the recommendations of mostly-male literature elite. Because they are men so they can't drop their sexism and it shows all the fucking time.

2. Sure, there are some women who have been accepted into the boys' club. So? They are rare exceptions. There are much more great female writers in new literature.

3. Not really. Most of them were at least middle class. They might have had hard time making a living when writing, but they were still able to do it, often because they got money from relatives and friends. If poor people could even read, they did not have time to write.

1. IA that some men cannot drop their sexism, racism, etc and it shows all the time. I definitely agree that lots of awards, reviews and so on are influenced by political factors.

What I don't agree is that you shouldn't read these authors just because they're white men. Their work has certainly influenced our society and literature. Just because you don't like something it doesn't mean you shouldn't educate yourself on what it says so that you can coherently say why you agree and why you don't.

Many of these authors were men because -- consider this -- for CENTURIES women didn't get the same access to things. Yes, it was unfair. It still doesn't mean that you shouldn't read these authors. It doesn't mean they were any worse writers. Many didn't even agree with the way "women, non-whites, lower-class" people were being treated.

And I'm truly (not) sorry, but I'm a woman and I don't feel personally attacked if I read these authors. Why? Because they're a part of the cultural background of our society, they influenced many non-white man authors I truly enjoy, and I like learning things. If I want to criticize something, for better or worse, I should know how the fuck it works. Also, I'm not going to shun good literary works simply because people like you have a persecution complex.

And hum, I know there are great writers in new literature, but who do you think influenced them? Women writers before them (most of which were white and upper/middle class) and MALE writers.

Sucks to be you, considering you probably read one book every 100 years and don't even know where the fuck it came from.

I would like to marry this comment.
