I also kind of think they shouldn't be allowed to present themselves as 'gamers' (whatever that means) or have their opinions on games taken seriously.

Um, no. This isn't law school where someone who only knows about the law via Night Court is clearly an epic poser, this is a damn HOBBY. People should be allowed to like and say whatever they want. YOU don't have to take it seriously and you can even hate it, but you can't forcibly stop them from doing it.

Well, I do care about it as a bit more than a hobby, so vo_ov As I said, if you only rank it as a hobby and have casual discussions, then that's fine. But if they want to participate in commenting on game journalism sites or trying to offer criticism on a game, their opinions should not carry much weight. I did say they shouldn't have their opinions taken SERIOUSLY, not that they can't offer them at all. It's more the expectation that they should be seen as equal to gamers who play wider varieties of games that I object to.

Eh, whatever. Obviously we're not gonna agree, so.

Re: gaming journalism - I agree that it would be harder to write about games when you tend to stick to a certain developer. (I've seen people try to do this at sites I've written for.) Like it would probably make my head hurt to watch someone who sticks to Nintendo games, to write about Call of Duty or Portal for example. Either that or you REALLY have to separate yourself from bias, like if you're just doing news and writing the facts. Even then, those facts can probably be worded better by someone who's actually played the series in question.

I agree completely. If you're deliberately cutting yourself out of a full 3 quarters of the available existing gaming library then you really aren't going to have a lot in the way of knowing what the fuck you're talking about in in-depth discussion.

Re: not op

But something like "gaming journalist" or a "game reviewer" is different from "gamer." The same way a "geek journalist" is different from a geek. Geek = you are into one or more geeky things. Gamer = you like games.

Should someone who only plays any one genre or company of game sign up for a job like that, no. But that's like saying no one can call themselves a geek because they only like tabletop games. They don't like PC or console gaming, movies, animanga, TV, et cetera et cetera, and because they have no interest in, or are cutting themselves off from massive geek bases, they have no right to consider themselves a geek. Shun that poser!

... except I wasn't talking about games journalism.

Look if you're* one of those people who come home from work and just want to bang out on Guitar Hero or whatever for an hour or two, and you don't care about gaming in general, that's one thing. What I have a problem with are people who are all I ONLY PLAY (X FRANCHISE) I R GAMAR!!!!! HAY GUIZE WATS UP OH R U TALKING ABOT FALOUT I NEVAR PLAYED THAT ZELDA IS SOOOOO MUCH BETAR!!!!11**

*(general you, not you you)

**parody of actual opinion

(anon that posted above) I did say commenting on games journalism sites, not actually reviewing games or having a journalism job ;)
But if gamer = likes games, then honestly, people who only play Nintendo games are not gamers. They don't like games; they have no overarching love for the medium, only for Nintendo. Not to say that they are lesser than other people, or that they cannot become 'gamers' in that sense, but they are only 'gamers' if I'm a film buff because I really like Avatar.

Re: not op

Avatar is a single movie, though. At the risk of sounding like a butthurt Nintendo fan, which I'm decidedly not - my tastes run to RTS - Nintendo is a lot more diverse than that, and surprisingly have good games that aren't Mario, Kirby, and Zelda.

Metroid? Advance Wars? The Mother series? Fire Emblem? Golden Sun? Pokemon? People seem to forget these because all they know of Nintendo is "LOL MARIO."

It may not be diverse company-wise, but if they love all of them, they do have a feel for many of the gaming genres out there. (Obvs not talking about only the Mario and Kirby fans.)

ARE YOU KIDDING?! POKEMOOOON?! THAT'S FOR TEN YEARS OLD!!!1ONE!

People seem to forget these because all they know of Nintendo is "LOL MARIO."

This. And also, I just wish I can put a wiimote in the "LOLMARIO" people's hands and make them play Super mario galaxy or new super Mario bros. These games make me invent new curses and insults.

(And no, I'm not a Nintendo elitist. I have a ps3, too, and a pc, and enjoy a lot of diffirent games. I'm just tired of all this people saying "Nintendo games are for kids!")

Re: not op

(Anonymous) 2011-02-07 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
pokemon is the very definition of repetitive games. good lord i could only play through one and any other i tried to play it was just more of "DIDN'T I PLAY THIS ALREADY?" At least Zelda and Mario and those other games have slightly different game mechanics.

Re: not op

(Anonymous) 2011-02-07 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Uh yeah because the mechanics of every Halo are totally different amirite? The anon was talking about the variety of genres within Nintendo games, not about the variety of genres within one series.

Re: not op

(Anonymous) 2011-02-06 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
That is, to be more accurate, like you calling yourself a film buff because you love everything by Universal Studios, as opposed to the single movie Avatar.

Re: not op

(Anonymous) 2011-02-06 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
well yes fair enough. I thought about that when I posted, but it shows how much I really know about films when I can't even bring a large movie studio to mind to use as a simile :D;
