I know. everyone always has the same opinions. sometimes there's that one level-headed guy, but everyone gangs up on him or just says a useless "ia" without adding on to the brilliant statement he delivered
but that's only one of many things that's fucked about fandoms. I've never actually been in any for longer than 1 week. people bitch about nothing all the time and pretend to be genius critics and it's lame

Yeah, same here. Occasionally it will enhance my enjoyment, but that usually fades into annoyance and hatred because of all the stupidity within fandom.

So now I don't so much join in as lurk around the edges.

Then don't join the fandom(s)...?

Yeah, I know what you mean. Fandom can be a wonderful place, but it can also be a dark, poisonous, evil place--either in behaviour, or just in pointing out everything that's wrong with the show and everything that could have been done to make it better, thus making you want it to be like that instead.

IDK if I'm weird, but I tend not to join fandoms for shows I absolutely love. The shows that drive me to de-lurk on forums are usually those I mostly like but also have issues with that I want to discuss.

That's why I've stayed away from a few different fandoms.

I can see w<hy, yes.

I try not to let it happen, but fandom does influence my perception of shows. So I hear you, OP. It's especially hard when you're surrounded by negative people who celebrate shows by tearing them down. It's why I never got into the House fandom or FMA.

I stay the hell away from fandoms for my very favorite things, and it's mainly because I want the playground all to myself. For things I'm less precious about, the fandom moron quota can be quite fun to mock.

Then what do you think you should stop doing?

I... I actually don't know how a person would join a fandom or what it would entail to be in one. Sometimes I draw fan-art for games/shows I like, but I don't know the first thing about what a community for those things would look like, or if it would call itself a 'fandom' if it existed.

Yeah, it does sometimes. Other times it just makes it more fun.

That happened with Community and me. Other than that I never really have a problem with other fandoms.

You know, I kind of get this. What's been happening to me is I get into a fandom, everything is shiny and wonderful for a bit, and then I start to feel all this pressure to Stay Caught Up With Everything and Participate and it stops being fun and starts being anxiety-inducing. So yeah.

Also, I like the layout of this secret.

I agree with you. Not all fandoms obviously since I'm chilling here, but boy do I backpedal the hell out of one once I see warning signs of mixing my perception of the fandom with the source material.

I think it depends on the people you surround yourself with in fandom, to be honest.

Then don't join fandom? :/

I think I'm the same way with TV shows but the opposite with anime/manga.
