...I like the bright colours.

I HATE PEOPLE LIKE YOU

[identity profile] aethre.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Just curious, but how do you ship characters from a show you've never seen? Just from looking at the fanworks or something?

[identity profile] ragnild.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS. How does that even work? Share the love and all that, but yeah, this left me curious.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-15 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to get into fandoms by reading fics before canon. The first fandom I got into was deserted and all the authors I like had moved on to another fandom (this is all pre-LJ, btw, when people had websites and webrings for their ships) so I just kinda followed the authors I liked from fandom to fandom and I always somehow ended up one step behind. Some of the fics I liked the characters enough to check out canon, some I never did. Or the fics were better than the canon, that happened too...

I guess though, you treat it like original fiction. Most of the pics that aren't just PWP introduce enough of the world and characters to get an OK idea of what going on.

Yeah, through the works. Often people who come into a fandom that way have a BNF or two on their flist, and that BNF does watch the show and get way into it and then write fic and make picspams and posts about how awesome it is, and so they bring in fans behind them. Some of those fans watch the canon and join the fandom and that was just their way in. But some of them are really just there because it's the happening thing, and they care more about the fanon than the canon. (Which I think is fine, as long as you don't expect everyone else to be just like you, and you're not obnoxious about it.)

It's a really common media slash fandom pattern. Less common for het because more het shippers are canon shippers, but it still happens there as well.

[identity profile] aethre.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh, makes sense. I guess, as a primarily canon het shipper/multishipper, I just don't have as much exposure to that. Well, that and I can't read fanfic and rarely look at the pretties for shows (or whatever) I haven't seen (read) yet.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Why not, I wonder? It's actually a decent show. (I don't ship anyone on there, I just liked it).

(Anonymous) 2011-02-15 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
That makes you and 90% of the sheep who joined the fandom back when it was the hip place to be.

At least tell me you've never written fic. Please?

*bitter, oh so very bitter*

[identity profile] ragnild.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Why so bitter anon? From what I've seen (and I am super duper late to the party), most of the authors seem pretty nice.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-15 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
LOLLING. Over-invested in some fictional characters much?

(Anonymous) 2011-02-15 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's kinda weird.

What's even more weird? Atlantis fandom being swamped with John/Rodney and rhapsodizing over how David Hewlett is so gorgeous and well built. WTF? The guy's alright, but he's like the Pillsbury Doughboy. How does that get translated into rippling muscles?

(Anonymous) 2011-02-15 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Wishful thinking is a wonderful thing.

[identity profile] ragnild.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol anon! That gets me everytime I am reading fic. I like it where the writers are more honest and don't make everybody into a supermodel. But yeah, like the other anon commented, wishful thinking.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-15 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree to a certain extent, but in a slash fic you're being given the POV of the person who is interested and - just like in real life - people see different things!

[identity profile] fencer-x.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, I can get getting into a ship before seeing a show, even reading a mountain of fic, filling your usepic slots with icons, etc.

But...have you never had the desire to actually SEE the canon yourself? :/ I've known other people like that in other fandoms and idgi. If you love something so much, wouldn't you want to see it acted out?

(Anonymous) 2011-02-15 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe Anon is afraid that if she/he/it watches the show, they'll fall in love with a totally different ship?

(Anonymous) 2011-02-15 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
And what a tragedy that would be!

[identity profile] fanficcionista.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what happened to me!! (and I don't regret a thing)

I admit, I love the ship - though I'm not terribly far into the fandom - but...I kind of have to wonder OP. Did you get into the ship because of the *characters*, or because it's one of the major slash ships? I'm not asking to be mean, but...sometimes it seems like people start shipping stuff because it's slash/a well known slash pairing in the fandom, rather than because they like how the characters interact.

Also, OP, I'd really recommend watching the show - It's one of my favorite shows, and...well. To be honest, fandom does tend to do characters a bit differently than they actually seem in the series. There was a secret a while back in a different fandom where most of the comments talked about just that in fact, so it might help to try watching the show.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-15 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I got you, OP: my biggest OTP is from a show that I refuse to watch because I read up on what happened in canon and it sucks. Not even in a "the writers fucked up their relationship"-way (though they did do that); the entire show just went to pot. idk, I guess I just like the basics of the characters and their relationship dynamics + the fandom!characterizations better than anything in canon.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-16 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I do not, and never will, understand this mindset. How the hell can you ship or write for a fandom that you know NOTHING about?

Having said that, you should really watch the show, I think I enjoyed it even more than SG-1 (just saying that around some fans is sacrilege and justifies me being anon, lol).

[identity profile] aethre.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Sacrilege!

Okay, yeah, SGA did coherent plotlines better than SG-1, but I still like the SG-1 characters more. Stupid SGU - I was hoping for my dream SG-1 character awesomeness without the twenty million retcons and plotholes.

(I still love the retcons and plotholes. I think it adds charm.)

(Anonymous) 2011-02-16 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ahw anon, I agree with you. I enjoy SGA better than SG-1 too. (Even though I have watched both and loved both).

It's a bit silly to start fanwars over it isn't it? I mean, it's the same franchise and some of the characters in SGA are from SG-1 so yeah...
