... wow, that fellow does look a surprising amount like Vash.
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (your argument is boring me.)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, his hair doesn't stick straight up like Vash -- the character just happens to be hanging upside down in that particular panel.

Ahhhhh, okay. Tricksy OP. :|

I haven't read much of Goodbye Chains, but there was no question in my mind that Trigun was a huge influence.

Never thought about that before, you're right! Also, thank you for the GC secret. It's always nice to see other fans of it. =D

an anime webcomic inspired by an anime? YOU DONT SAY

(Anonymous) 2011-02-16 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
anime webcomic

sigh

(Anonymous) 2011-02-15 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks like straightup ripoff to me.

i kinda dislike goodbye chains, ngl. when other people talk about good the writing is i'm like "wat"

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You must not know a lot about western wear. That guy's shirt isn't based on Vash's jacket, that's just a style of shirt that men wore in the west at that time, that buttoned in the front like that (and you can still buy shirts like that at western-style clothing stores). I wish I could remember what that's called -- but lots of cowboys wore those. As for the old-timey round-framed sunglasses, I know I've seen those in a Western somewhere, maybe Tombstone or something?

I haven't read enough of the comic to surmise if the character personalities completely mirror those of Vash and Wolfwood, but geez you really think an anime came up with some of these steampunk/old West looks?

(Anonymous) 2011-02-15 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, I don't think OP ever suggested that an an anime came up with that style shirt, nor the Old West/steampunk aesthetic. They simply said that the comic and the anime were of a similar style in that department. :I

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-02-15 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but that's kind of dumb reasoning. There's plenty of fiction like that out there. It's a bit of a stretch to say it's a total ripoff of Trigun because it's set in the Old West.

This kind of reminds me of the few times I've come across people saying that [x mecha series] is a ripoff of Transformers just because that's the only similar series they know about.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-15 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Its aesthetic looks quite inspired by Trigun and I have a feeling the author would probably admit that straight-up if anyone asked.

GC is a good comic though. It actually does the snarky dialogue thing right, which is incredibly rare in webcomics.

[identity profile] heykidzcomix.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry to disappoint, but nope! We didn't see Trigun until well after the comic was underway, and did not care for it. (Actually, Tracy's the only one who watched it all the way through. I didn't make it past a few episodes.) Colin's shirt is an engineer's shirt, which I picked because my dad had a shirt like that when I was a kid, and which I selected because Colin is an engineer (civil, but still). The glasses were originally welder's goggles (he was originally going to be more of an inventor type), but they didn't exist in that form back then, so I made them sniper glasses instead. I can see why you think that, but you're incorrect.

As for the rest, Colin doesn't have an issue with his brother, and Trigun did not invent the West, cynicism, or being good at shooting things.

<3 i love your guys' comic!

[identity profile] heykidzcomix.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! We're very glad you do :D.

LOL SPOILERS

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
TBH I had the same sort of suspicions (it wouldn't be the first time a webcomic author has been inspired by anime... the author of TJ and Amal said straight up her characters were inspired by Samurai Champloo). Colin reminds me so much of Vash, and Banquo steamingly of Wolfwood... right down to Banquo's death spurring an emo period for Colin (er, spoilers?). If I squint I can read the comic like it's AU Trigun fanfic. But I'll buy the author's comment above. :P Sometimes, it's just a coincidence.

To be fair, Colin's "emo period" has been a day. It just feels like forever because webcomic time is awful.

I keep telling myself I'll quit checking for updates for a while and then go back and catch up to avoid 'webcomic time', but I can't stay awaaaaaaaaaaaay. |D

Coincidences: they exist.
