Okay, I understand where this is coming from (since I make playlists for characters and pairings on my iPod to listen to while writing/RPing), but..."You can't help it"? "I don't choose what I listen to"? I'm a little iffy on the idea that you don't make your music choices at ALL...particularly since I can't imagine why rock or indie wouldn't work for fanvids or your fandom. I think you probably just...like pop music. And that's OK, there's nothing wrong with that.

OP

no, it's not like that
I do listen to indie and rock - but to a very little amout of songs, that suit my fanworks. And that is probably 2 %. I miss almost whole lot of music.
When I write a fic, I keep listening to the song that gos with it. When the fic is over and I start another one - I hate that song.

Yeah...I don't buy it. Sorry. I could really see it the other way around - If you were saying something like "I *usually* like indie rock, but when a pop song reminds me of my fandom, It just gets to me!"

I'm not trying to say that you're "doing it wrong" or anything. Don't feel bad for liking something that some people look down upon! You like what you like, and lying about that is pretentious, which is often worse than being "shallow"!

I just think that if you liked indie rock better, it would start to speak to you in your character's voices, you know? I'm sure that different people who like the same fandom hear different soundtracks for it.

Nah, I kinda get it. Some kinds of music just don't go with certain fandoms, whether by sound or subject matter - and vice versa. Maybe OP just likes pop fandoms.

Well, you can't really control what you connect to emotionally, which (at least for me) is what leads to connecting a song to a story that I care about.

I mean, there are artists whom I really respect as artists, but I can't imagine using their songs as inspiration because I just can't connect with the emotional content.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-19 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Well you need to change fandoms, then. Pick up a show that works with whatever music you want to listen to.http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Ptitlegyapr6lq?from=Main.WhyFandomCantHaveNiceThings

Same, same, kind of. I like listening to music that I can play a sort of head-music video with. Most of the time it's pop music since it's just so easy to have it play along in my head. I still listen to indie music and such, but a lot of times I'll skip over the songs that I really do love and go to American pop, k-pop, j-pop, etc etc.

[identity profile] ceruleansan.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh God same here. There are a lot of beautiful songs but I'm afraid i can't enjoy them unless they fuel my overactive imagination.

[identity profile] yuumeko.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Kind of reminds me of how my boyfriend only seems to like music if it comes in a video game or movie. Basically, it needs to be accompanied by some moment for him to be memorable. If I send him music just from album or something (it doesn't even have to be pop or mainstream) he can't care for it.

Not gonna lie, I also feel like he misses out on a lot...

(Anonymous) 2011-02-19 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm like that too - I have some music that I just like as music, but the majority of it is associated with other stuff. I'm not really into music (I can never tell people what bands I like cause I have no idea what's cool and I don't want to look like an idiot haha), and there's so much of it that I just can't be really bothered with it if I don't already have some motivation to listen to it! I guess some people are better at 'feeling' music, and people like me and your boyfriend maybe need some extra help to get emotion from music and care about it? Just a hypothesis :T

[identity profile] yuumeko.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
No, definitely agree. Just as some people feel preference for certain music genres, then its likely there's a preference to music in general. Music associated with certain moments probably increases the ability to "feel" something for it, i.e. increases the preference of a song.

I can listen to a band and like their music by itself, but very often I will end up listening to an album, and if I don't run into a really great song about 3 or 4 songs later, I start to get bored because hearing a certain band's "style" or "flavor" too much will get bland. So I definitely can see why theme songs or soundtracks from movies/video games will have more meaning than "song x on album y".

Can see that. Especially Supernatural fandom.

[identity profile] twenty-rooks.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps if you named a few of your fandoms you'd get a few recs for rock songs for them? Could be fun!

[identity profile] mythc-writer.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
The fandom in my head choices the songs? I don't like that wording. I've found with complex characters, a lot of songs fit them. And if they don't, sometimes I take a song that doesn't and make it about them. It creates very cracky things...

Anyway back on subject, if you want to listen to other music, do so. It's not like you're drawing 24/7. Obviously you aren't satisfied with what you have. I find some of my music by listening to AMVs.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really think you should be ashamed of liking the music you like, even though it's pop. I've never really understood fanmixes or fanvids, so I kind of envy you.
