I have been waiting for Torres secrets!

I don't know what to tell you OP. Did he look really unmotivated at times earlier this season? Yes. Has that always been the case? No. Injuries probably played a big part, as well as the owners issue and managers saga. However, lfc fans kind of did treat Torres like the eight wonder of the world and then he treated us like shit. Of course people are going to be bitter.

I haven't seen a lot of those kind of comments you mention though, maybe I looking in all the right places? Or I'm just really good at ignoring things, idk.

I'd rather have people giving all their Torres-love to Suarez than Carroll personally.

They say those kind of things because their feelings were hurt. Also, they no longer have a reason to defend him against the haters...

Fans forget that players are fundamentally businessmen. They have desperately short careers, which an injury could end at any point and so they have a limited time to get together enough money to make themselves and their families financially secure. Torres probably only has another couple of years at the top, I suppose he thinks that Chelsea offer him a better chance of winning trophies than Liverpool, although I'm not sure about that. Doesn't make it any easier for the fans to stomach, particularly when a player declares undying love for his new team, but there we are.

LOL Fernando Torres makes me laugh. Many fans feel that way about certain players, especially ones that came with a lot of hype and a lot of money was invested in him. When Fernando came to Liverpool he was still a really in-demand player. He was great with the Spanish NT and he did play really well with Atletico Madrid. I mean, he had his great moments with Liverpool, too, but he wasn't as great as many had hoped, and the constant injuries didn't help either. Due to this, he lost a lot momentum, at least in my eyes. He doesn't even register on my radar as a good player anymore, which is a shame because back in 2008 I thought he was brilliant. I think he's one of those players that has good talents but really people are much more interested in the fame of the name, like David Beckham. Good player, but teams mostly want him for jersey sales.

And fans dogging a player they once claimed was the best thing EVAR? Nothing new, people do it all the time. Especially when it comes to big clubs like Chelsea. Especially Chelsea. They have kind of brought upon themselves this huge rep as one the more hated teams in football. I don't like them, mostly because I don't like a lot of the players on the team, but I find their stats crazy impressive (well, not as much this season as the last couple of seasons) and they're actually funny in both ironic and unironic ways.

Thank you for bringing up jersey sales, because it is so true.

You know, I'd been wondering at the lack of Torres secrets, but then I suppose a lot of football fans don't generally get involved in this area of fandom. Shame, because I feel it'd be very interesting.

As a Chelsea supporter who loves them because of their trolling nature, even I was shocked at Torres' comments, I'll admit. It was an incredibly obvious ploy to get the Chelsea fans on his side, and it certainly stung the LFC fans (for obvious reasons). Just as obviously, though, I understand why he did it-as someone else said, footballers are businessmen first and foremost. This is their job. If someone did this in a boardroom, it's be "ambitious" rather than "traitorous". It's always an unpleasant shock to fans when something that they're passionate about turns out to be nothing more than a way to make money for others, especially if it's one of their idols.

I used to be a huge Torres fan, back in 2008ish (and I still support Spain NT, though mostly for the other players), but he's in the twilight of his career, I think, and I understand that now's not the time for integrity, I think-he has to look out for his family and grab as much financial security as he can, because he's, what, in his late twenties? And his earnings now need to last his family for the rest of his life.

My only other comment is that, as a football fan, there is no group more fickle than the crowds at a football stadium. It's like wildebeast, they can be turned by the tiniest movement. The press doesn't help, either.

"he has to look out for his family"

This is the part that I don't get whenever Chelsea fans bring it up. I hardly think financial security is a bother wherever he chooses to play. Many athletes still work in some form or other when they retire, too :/

I'm not sure why the move, but then I was never particularly knowledgeable about how much he was getting from Liverpool. Chelsea paid a pretty penny for him, though. And you've gotta remember, footballers have a vastly different idea of what an acceptable amount of money is if they've been in the business for a couple of years. :/

I'm sure he'd like to retire at 32ish, though, and never have to work again. I know I would if I could make that kind of money.

oh fernando!

the part that struck me the most about his leaving was the timing. leaving in the january transfer window just made him look like an asshole, and while his career is running on time, i would have liked to see him last through the rest of the season. various complaints of his playing, and the rest of the squad too, he was a member of the team that was questioned about relegation, he could be a member of the team that clawed its way out. i wanted him to be there with us, to be a part of liverpool for a few more months, for us to give him the proper sendoff, the respectful sendoff he deserves, because to imagine him staying past this summer is a bit loopy. torres wanted to go.

but yes, there are always people going to be wrong on the internet, and yeah, there were and are a lot of hypocritical liverpool fans. saying that we're hurt and offended and disrespected isn't an excuse to suddenly slag off a man who we loved. but yeah, this is sports and there's always a long and short memory that comes with being a fan.
