...Because you're European and know we're probably gonna be screwed yet again?

*coughs* Sorry, ignore me. Just being bitter about Tales Of The Abyss and all the other games I'll never get to play.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-19 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
PS3s are region-free. You could always import!

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I've tried that already, actually; way back in the day when I was heartbroken over Xenogears and FF Tactics and so forth. Unfortunately I didn't realize that the console wouldn't be compatible with my TV -- I ended up spending even more money on special cables and shit, but that didn't help all that much (every game was black-and-white and without sound).

So yeah, not about to go through that again! Also, there's no way in hell I can afford it these days.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-19 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
actually, I just meant the game -- it should work on a european PS3 (hence, region-free). Unless you're trying to tell me you don't have one, which is another matter entirely.

[identity profile] ecoerrante.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
But...wasn't FF Tactics and Xenogears on the PS1? Because those games, even on the PS3 - if I remember right - still have regional restrictions, as do DVDs on the PS3. Maybe that was part of the problem?

Either way, I'm sorry that it went down like that ;A;

[identity profile] oftendistracted.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
You're in luck!

That was an issue between NTSC and PAL outputs - a problem that is completely removed if you're using an HDTV. You don't even need a US PS3, either - you can just pop the US disc in a UK PS3 and away you go. (Though you may want to create a US account on that PS3, for Playstation Network stuff.)

[identity profile] complaining.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
HI OP. You just made my day: I didn't know. NOW I'M SO EXCITED IDEK ;o;

[identity profile] kalorii.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I cried, too.

For Namco's stupidity.

I shouldn't have been surprised but part of me was hoping that they'd give us Graces on the Wii as well. Sorry Namco but Graces isn't worth the $600 some odd I'd have to spend to play the game.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-19 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoah there, a PS3 is like $200 used. Unless you're factoring in an HDTV there as well.

[identity profile] kalorii.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I was counting a PS3 new in Canadian plus the 13% tax and the $60 game. Either way, that's still not worth it. :/ I don't have a PS3 because there's nothing else I'd play on it so spending so much on one console for one game seems a bit ridiculous.

[identity profile] oftendistracted.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I'd call it stupid, per se. If they're going to take a risk and bring out Graces in the US - and it is kind of a risk, as their recent sales figures have shown - then they might as well go for the gusto and bring out the HD/FutureArc/FullDancingAndSwinging version rather than the Wii version, which would either require extra developmental costs to add the Future arc or else would stir up more fan discontent at the fact it's missing.

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
They're still bringing Tales games to the USA?! That's great! Some of the things I'd heard made it sound like they'd given up on the series here.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
They had, but according to a recent interview given by the vice-president of Namco-Bandai, fan demand (through letters and phone calls) made them realize that the Western fanbase was too big to ignore. And since people were asking the Namco PR guy Rich to bring over Graces F the most, that's the game they chose to localize. :)

Still, I feel like this is just testing the waters -- if this sells well, they'll bring games over again, and if it doesn't then they won't -- so we've still got to give it all we got. If you're looking to buy this game, I implore you to buy it within the first week of release, as that's when sales REALLY matter. :) If you can't or don't want to, I understand, but I hope that you will!

And if you want to keep up with future Tales news (release dates, etc.), then the following sites might be of service:

www.abyssalchronicles.com <--an AMAZING site with all the up-to-date Tales news;

www.unitedfortales.org <--still a fledgling site, but a place where all of those who want Tales localized or are just fans of the series can gather

www.facebook.com/tales <--if you have a Facebook, that's the official Tales wall; the PR guy, Rich, has giveaways there every now and then, and fans gather there as well

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly I don't currently have a PS3. :( My brother's girlfriend does, though--maybe I'll get it as a gift to them so they can enjoy it, and that way the series will get more support here, too. ^^

[identity profile] goldenveila.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't cry, but I was super excited to hear that another Tales game is coming to North America. :)

[identity profile] amidoh.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll only cry if they bring out the Wii version as well.

Of course, that's if it makes it to Europe at all.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Whoever it was that made this secret, GOOD JOB, A++++, YOU ARE SPREADING THE WORD LIKE WE NEED TO. <3

With that out of the way . . .

I know that, within this fandom, there is a LOT of discontent. We have one of the most broken 'bases out there right now, and let me just say, that's not a good thing. Between the people who are upset that we're not getting Vesperia PS3, and the people that are upset at the people that are upset because we're not getting Vesperia PS3, and those who want Graces on the Wii, and those who are worried it's not coming to Europe -- I know. I know, I know, I know. There are quite a few reasons to be worried/upset, but here's the thing:

This is NOT a secure, sure-fire bet that we're getting Tales games in the future after this one.

Namco-Bandai is pretty much testing the waters with this. For those who don't know, this localization was a result of massive fan demand through phone calls and letters (not to mention Facebook spamming, although honestly, I don't think that helped too much at all). They chose to localize Graces F because that was the one people wanted the most -- and, indeed, when Namco's Facebook/Twitter representative Rich Bantegui asked people what game they wanted the most, the Wii faction of the fanbase was all but dead silent. In other words, Namco-Bandai picked the game that they thought would get them the most money, due to the fact that they are struggling financially right now and the Tales series hasn't been seen as a lucrative series in the past.

That being said, we as a fanbase need to unite and show them that we're serious. If we want Tales games in the future -- Tales of the Abyss for the 3DS, for instance (Europe, this could be your chance to FINALLY get this game) or Tales of Xillia -- we need to show them that we as a fanbase can put our money where our mouths are and give them the profits they need. The only Tales game that has been reported by Namco as having sold well was Tales of Symphonia, no doubt aided by the advertising that Nintendo gave it; since we can be pretty sure that Tales of Graces F is not going to get any aid by Sony in the advertising department, and since Namco themselves are pretty bad about advertising, that leaves it to us as a fanbase to not only purchase the game, but spread the word.

What does that mean for us? Well . . .

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 01:12 am (UTC)(link)

We're most likely not going to reach the 300k mark that Tales of Symphonia did in its first week (I believe it was the first week), but Tales of Vesperia and Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New Fai--I mean, World both sold over 200k. While those aren't the best sales, they do show that the series has a solid fanbase. At the very least, if you've ever had any passing interest in the Tales series at all, I behoove you to purchase Tales of Graces F within the first week, even if you don't have a Playstation 3. And before you say, "Oh, sure, go ahead and say that when you probably have one," I don't. I don't own a Playstation 3 and won't for awhile, because I honestly see no need for the system. But, I want to play Tales of Graces F, and I want to play Tales of Xillia if/when we get it. If you buy the system used, either in Gamestop or off eBay, then it may not be too expensive. Regardless, we just have to get the sales numbers up.

On top of that, as I said before, Namco-Bandai most likely isn't going to advertise this game very much. Tales of Symphonia was the only Tales game to any sort of real advertising, after all. The rest didn't. Not only that, but Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Vesperia were the only Tales games to be released at an appropriate time in the West. Tales of the Abyss was released right next to Final Fantasy XII, I believe, while Tales of Legendia was released alongside Kingdom Hearts II (or perhaps those two releases were flip-flopped -- regardless, FFXII and KHII were the games they were competing against). You can guess how well they did, sales wise. And if you can't, I can tell you: abysmal. Their sales were abysmal.

Since Namco-Bandai won't advertise and since there's a risk they're going to release Graces F alongside other big name titles (we're hoping they'll release in the summer but that isn't guaranteed), we as a fanbase need to advertise for them. Even if you can't get the game yourself, spread the word. Bring it up in fandom discussions, if you can slip it in. Tell your friends. Put it in your forum signatures. Bring it up in game stores with the employees. Wherever you can bring it up, do so. Spreading the word is key here, especially to those who don't really know about the series, because you can get them interested and they might buy the game.

Anyway, I think that's enough of a spiel from me. If you want to stay up-to-date on Tales information, check out the following sites:

www.unitedfortales.org <--it's a new site, but it's meant to gather all those who are interested in the series and/or want to help future localizations

www.abyssalchronicles.com <--AWESOME site with tons of up-to-date Tales information

www.facebook.com/tales <--if you have a Facebook, this is the official fanpage for Tales. The PR guy, Rich, updates it with information and contests/giveaways (such as soundtracks, posters, etc.), not to mention other Tales fans gather there to talk
