I'm one of the people who have gotten into fandoms strictly from the fanart, so yes, thank you fanartists. You made me give several things a try (including anime) that I wouldn't have otherwise.

Totally agree.

I think the people that have poisoned that well are those that got into the fandom through fanworks and then never bothered with the canon, and would proudly proclaim that. That might be what turns people off. (That, and only being able to see the canon through the interpretation of those that created the fanworks.)

Being intrigued by fanart, by itself, is as legit as being intrigued by screenshots or whatnot. "Oh look, this might be relevant to my interests. Let's see if it actually is." Anything might spark that!

I didn't realise it was an issue either. I once read that someone got into Final Fantasy VII because they stumbled upon Sephiroth/Cloud art and I thought that was awesome.

Yeah, it shouldn't matter how they get into a fandom as long as they get into it. Getting into a series because of beautiful fanart is no worse than getting into a series because it had a cool cover or a friend made you watch it.

I usually have to research and find out about characters, pairings, basic mood (depressing or earn your happy ending because the former is a nono) before trying out something, and fanworks always help too. I agree <3

I don't see anything wrong with getting into a series via fanart (or fanfic, or fanrants, or... anything, really). I just find it kind of weird when someone participates in fandom without ever reading/watching/playing any of the source work. Like... what's the point?

...That's a legit question, if anyone would care to enlighten me.

I don't think I'm in anything where I'm not familiar with the source material, so I'm only going by what I've heard from people I've met.

They just like the fanwork. It's pretty, interesting, or just cool. And sometimes the source material seems overwhelming to them (marvel/dc comics for some). I mostly agree with the OP regarding games since they're not as easily accessible to play, and can be very expensive (although, LPs are good replacements in that case imo).

I guess if they were trying to get into discussions without knowing what they're talking about is kinda weird though.

Dude, Transformers Animated kept me sane during a rough time abroad. I found it because there were two amazing artists making amazing fanart. TF2? It was the fanart and fanvids that convinced me the game had to be oodles of fun as well. It's as good a way to get into a fandom as anything else.

I guess I'll give the unpopular opinion and say I kind of disagree since whenever I see someone getting into fandom because of fanart/fanfic they like it for superficial reasons like "omg that pairing/character is so hot" or "the interactions between these characters are so cute!" when they don't actually know the source material and a lot of the time don't care to know the source material. It might be just me and the fandoms I'm in but I can't help but feel opposed :/
