Agreed so much. Can I hug you or something, OP?

(Anonymous) 2011-02-19 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just a cashgrab, since Pixar made a shit ton of merchandising off the first movie. Frankly, though the Toy Story sequels have been good, I'm happy with Incredibles being a standalone.

[identity profile] mentalguru.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
OP: There's certainly been some negativity but I haven't seen much in the way of whining for the Incredibles m yself, just people wanting it, and I mean come on, it's a superhero movie, way too easy to make a sequel out of that sort of thing. But in terms of negativity- that's only to be expected I mean the Cars 2 trailer has certainly made some people worried, including those who were not before. (Though for myself I quite liked Mater in the trailer, even though at times he bugged me a bit in the original). But then considering the complaints related to the first cars- it's almost as if they are packing enough action for both the movies combined in this one. A part of me almost wonders if this was the result of some of those complaints.

To anon above: People talk about the cash, and yes obviously Cars is a major merchandise area, but let's face it PIXAR (and Disney) is and are a company/companies, a company folks, of course they'll be wanting that sort of thing. Making money is the game, and they get that by making movies and characters people love. Certainly I do not love every single Pixar but a lot of people do and I can't say I think any Pixar movie is an absolute dung pile even if I'm not keen on every single one.

I do think it's probably a money thing. I mean duh. I'm sure they enjoy making movies but it's not entirely out of the 'goodness of their hearts' or some gift they're providing. No, it's technically a product and if they weren't in high enough demand they wouldn't still be around.

I'm a bit concerned about this sequel and also the monsters inc one, while the TS sequels were good, those are the only franchise in terms of sequels they've produced so far. It doesn't necessarily mean this will be good and early reviews have been unfavourable.

But I'm going to give it a chance anyway even if some of the trailer leaves me a bit apprehensive. Heck I quite liked the first one (albeit some of my world building nerd nerves taking a hit) and it's possible it might turn out okay.

I'm a bit concerned about the villian though honestly from what I've heard.

Pixar/Disney has made 5 billion dollars off of Cars merchandising. I think that at least deserves one sequel.

And yeah, I'd love an Incredibles sequel too, but ONLY if Brad Bird is involved in it. I don't want a sucky Incredibles sequel!

[identity profile] mentalguru.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if a sequel is for the money it doesn't mean it will necessarily suck in any case.

Nor a new director IMO will make something suck. I mean Monsters Inc is getting a new director, and hopefully that will be a good thing (remains to be said- rumours of a prequel are not something I'm enthusiastic over). There's both good and bad things to getting a new director though- such as say with TS3, which was very different in tone to some of the others even though it recycled some elements at the same time from TS2. Even though it's my least favourite TS (I'm in the minority there), it had a different director and was a good movie. Who knows, fresh meat or one of the other old timers might actually have a good crack at a sequel even without being the big cheese in the original.

Honestly though I'm more excited for Kung Fu Panda 2 than Cars 2 even though I'll watch it too, even though dreamworks as a less than stellar record with sequels.

[identity profile] kayleen-san.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Considering how Dreamworks is planning (or was at the end of last year--I'm *really* hoping they decided not to do this) SIX "Kung Fu Panda" movies, I'm not putting much hope into any of them.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I don't really want an Incredibles sequel. I think it's just fine as it is.

[identity profile] imshort123.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I'm one of two people on the entire internet who actually loved Cars and am really excited for its sequel, mostly because TS 2 & 3 proved that Pixar only puts out sequels that are as good as the original, if not better.

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I the other one of the two? I loved Cars and I think the sequel looks silly and ridiculous and awesome.

[identity profile] dullscythe.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Well there's three of us, at least, who enjoyed Cars

(Although I'm also a big fan of the Incredibles)

[identity profile] cykstar.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Cars was absolutely adorable and the sequel looks pretty awesome fun. As long as it's fun to watch, I don't see what the big deal is.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
No no no, I do too! I'm looking forward to the sequel as well. :)

[identity profile] hello-ilu.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
I really liked Cars! I am kind of wary of the sequel, but I guess I'll just find out if I liked the characters or the plot more :|

[identity profile] favabean05.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Cars, lol

(Anonymous) 2011-02-19 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, and I liked neither.

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Pixar has always made it a point to only make sequels they actually felt they had good ideas for, anyway. (Which is why the entire Toy Story trilogy was stretched out so long over time.) I'm pretty confident that this means they feel like they've got a good story for Cars 2, and either Incredibles doesn't need a sequel, or there aren't enough good ideas for it yet. And these days? That's SUCH a refreshing attitude. So bring on Cars 2, I say, even if I didn't care for the first film.
(But don't punch Brad Bird, he's awesome. :< He can't help what fanbrats say!)

I think people forget that the primary audience for these movies is KIDS. Cars has a kind of appeal that gets to kids at their earliest ages... my two-year old nephew is a HUGE Lightning McQueen fan, for instance, and his two older brothers (ages 6 and 7) also love the first movie to pieces. The Incredibles was designed to appeal to an older demographic-- older children, teens-- and it did well and was a great movie. But Cars is AMAZING for what it is, and did even better.

Tiny people deserve great movies too.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-19 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that they're making a sequel to Cars a.k.a. their strongest toy franchise (next to Toy Story which already got two sequels), because it shows they love milking the cash cow.

Btw, I love Pixar. I'm just sick of the people pretending they're oh so different from other animation companies :)

[identity profile] shinshokuinsane.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think Cars is the most middling of Pixar's films (and trust me, I'm not really a Pixar fan), but The Incredibles is the one I outright hate the most. I'd rather Cars get a sequel than the incredibly-done-but-still-detested-by-me Incredibles.

[identity profile] cykstar.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm actually excited for the sequel. It looks like so much fun. Cars with guns attached, accents, and traveling the world? And it looks really beautifully done, going off the trailer.

[identity profile] mentalguru.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The animation in the first movie with the race scenes was top notch so it's probably going to be some serious animation quality with all the action they're throwing in. Regardless of actual story the animation is certainly going to be impressive.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-19 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I did prefer The Incredibles to Cars, but ugh. Monsters Inc. is getting a sequel too, but nobody's bitching about that or saying Finding Nemo deserves it more, now are they?

[identity profile] sindragosa.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just kind of... confused as to the direction they're going in with Cars 2. The first movie had a lot of heart and soul, and the sequel is about... super agents? Where did that come from?!

[identity profile] lesbido.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen Cars but I hated The Incredible sfm. It's just Fantastic Four meets Watchmen meets Swiss Family Robinson.

The only thing that kept me watching was Jason Lee being all bad ass playing the voice of the villain.
