It certainly doesn't absolve her of the way she treated Harry, but I honestly felt really bad for Petunia. I mean, how would you feel if you found out yep, magic is real! There's a whole other world out there full of dragons and castles and spells and excitement and all those things you've always secretly wished were real, and guess what? You'll never be a part of it!

My heart kind of broke for Petunia when I thought about that. It doesn't excuse her treatment of Harry at all, but it sure does make me feel bad for her.

Agreeing with you. The only person I sympathized with after the flashbacks of book seven was Petunia, and I'm sorry now we never got more on her, in the earlier books.

I've always thought that Petunia's bad treatment of Harry was caused by the desire not to let her son feel worse than him because she suspected that Harry is a wizard and Dudley isn't. It didn't seem to me like the Dursleys treated Harry badly because they enjoyed making him suffer but rather that they did it to show that they favour Dudley over Harry. Their obsession with the glorification of 'normalcy' also doesn't seem random.

See, I hadn't thought of that, and reading the comments here, there are other things I'd missed, and damn if I'm not bitter now that we didn't get more on the Dursleys.

I would agree with you if it wasn't clear that they were spoiling Dudley from the start. They could have treated Harry simply with indifference and done what you suggested, but it seems as though there was active attacks on Harry's pysche.

This. Not to mention that oh, by the way, your sister gets to be a part of it and go away to school and learn all this stuff. And she'll come home and do it all in front of you. And your parents will love her more than you (this probably was not actually true, but Petunia very clearly thought it was and that's the point here). And you'll try to cast it away and forget, but then that wonderful sister's equally wonderful son is dumped on your doorstep as a constant reminder.

It doesn't excuse her at all, but you can feel some sympathy. And it means OP makes a really good point.

ia. I would have probably turned out a total bitch if my sister got to be a witch and go to magic school and I didn't. I think most of us would be bitter as fuck. Just saying.

And don't forget that a good-sized chunk of that wonderful magic world that you so desperately wish you were part of actively thinks non-magic users are subhuman or at best, regards them as childish, naive lesser beings. That certainly didn't help things either.
