stupid question: what's wrong with saying "normal weight"?

Normal = within the norm. It means of average weight for a healthy person of their age and height. but the moment anyone uses the word "normal" someone's bound to take unreasonable offence.

I maintain that we should all just start using "average" instead of "normal". It means the same thing but for some reason everybody wants to be normal yet no one wants to be average :D

Except that when I think 'normal' weight, I think overall healthy* and somewhere between under and over weight. Whereas the 'average' weight, at least of Americans, is at least a bit overweight.

I think 'normal weight' is fine, particularly since we use 'underweight' and 'overweight' without anyone kicking up a fuss about it. What else are you supposed to say, "at weight"? :\

* yeah I know, overweight doens't automatically equal unhealthy, etc.

except the "average weight" in america is higher than the "normal weight". The average would be adding up the weight of every adult and dividing by the number of individuals in the population, while normal is the weight that people are supposed to be/considered healthy.
