As for minorities, she identifies as bisexual, so even you couldn't deny that she has the right to sing about LGBT issues. But if I'm black, am I not allowed to be interested in the rights of, say, Filipinos? If I was a writer, would I only allowed be to write about black characters? If I see someone calling a hispanic person a 'spic', am I not allowed be angry, to call them out and say they're a racist idiot? I know you don't like Gaga or her music or the way she does things, but even if you're completely right in hating her, you can't deny her the right to write/sing/talk about people outside of her own ethnic or cultural groups.

I doubt she is a bisexual. People use the term so languidly, especially in their early adulthood, that I can't consider it a "minority".

You missed the point. People are free to fight for the inalienable rights of humans everywhere, but, there is a way to go by it. You missed the key word in my comment, " ignorance ". She is ignorant on the issues of race by carelessly trying to twist the meaning of words without properly researching them or understanding the affect they will have on the people in question.

If one does not simply walk into Mordor, then one simply can not flip script on a racist word without understanding the context. You just don't write a song and call it a day. Especially if she doesn't even speak upon it and address the backlash. Having the fans do the explaining isn't enough if you're trying to be the Crusader.

Now you're just perpetuating the harmful stereotype that all bisexuals are faking it. :|

Ignorant.

I am not the anon above, and I agree that it's a harmful stereotype to just say all bisexuals are faking it. I'm bisexual myself. But, Gaga said that her attraction to women was merely physical.

Whether she is bisexual or not, I can't say. But she's out there perpetuating the other harmful stereotype that bisexual women only sleep with other women because they are hot or want attention.

We can't say she is a lying, we don't know. But it's still harmful that she comes off as nothing but a shallow bisexual woman who has never been in love with a woman and will not see herself doing so.

I'm a lesbian and I've never been in love with a woman, and don't think I ever will. Sexuality is about, you know, sex, not being in love with people.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-20 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I would say you're an aromantic lesbian, then. Most lesbians, including myself, identify as such because we fall in love with women as well as wanting to have sex with them.

Gaga presents herself in a heteronormative way. 99% of her sexual imagery and lyrics are about her being attracted to men. She often talk about dating men in interviews, and not women. The only time she brings up an interest in women, it's in a sexy, mainstream accepted way (making out with a female cop in "Love Game", the meaning behind "Poker Face", vaguely flirting with Beyoncé in "Telephone"). I don't like the stereotype that all bisexuals are faking it either, but as a bisexual myself I think it's really harmful to claim to be bisexual but act in a heteronormative way. I don't like doubting someone's sexuality, and for the most part when someone comes out as bi I believe them, but the evidence is against Gaga here.

Perhaps I should have worded it in a less offensive way but one of the responders already explained what I tried to say about Lady Gaga and people like her.

Despite that, my point still stands.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-20 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Except for the bisexual comment, I agree with all of this.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-20 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah...you had me up to, "People use the term so languidly, especially in their early adulthood, that I can't consider it a "minority"." Nice way to undo whatever point you were making about ignorance.

Concerning the comments below, if you had made that point specific to Lady Gaga, there'd be no problem. However, that read more as a general description of bisexuals. As a bisexual who is really tired of seeing variations on that statement, fuck you and fuck your assumptions.

(And for the record, I don't even like Gaga, or that song.)
