I have to wonder about these people who are crucifying Petunia because she gave into jealousy and bitterness at the tender age of 11 or 12 and didn't get over it in time to reconcile with Lily. Do they even have siblings? I mean, not that anything justifies child abuse, but it's weird how Petunia's dysfunction is somehow less forgivable than Snape's creeper obsession.

Yet people are completely ready to crucify an abused, dysfunctional teenager for falling in with the bad crowd because he found a group of friends that accepted him the way he was. The pendulum swings both ways. The fact that Petunia had a loving family growing up (and yes, maybe she wasn't the special one but they did love her. She wasn't treated like dirt. And Lily was Muggle-born so it's not like Petunia was the only non-magical one in her family. She wasn't an outcast) only made it easier for her to grow out of her bitterness and hatred. The only support Snape got after the falling out with Lily was from his Dark Arts buddies. Is it any wonder the he remained dysfunctional and awful?

Petunia got disappointed as a child and decided to be a bitch to her sister because of something that her sister couldn't even control and actually tried to share with her. And she continued to push her away. Everyone gets disappointed as a child. My sister has a natural artistic talent that I will never possess and could become a great artist without even trying. Yea it's shitty but that's not her fault. It just happened that way. And yes, I was pissed when my parents would go on about it. But I got over it once I realized that it wasn't her fault. I didn't continue to shun her for something that she couldn't control just because I was jealous of her.

No one is saying Snape's a saint. But making him out to be a character whose behavior makes no sense and isn't justifiable by any means is just crazy. And that's what I see a lot of people doing. It's like saying that no one is ever allowed to be a victim of their circumstances because "we all make our own decisions," which is absolute BS if you've ever known someone who grew up in a poor, broken home and had an awful upbringing. The right decision becomes a lot harder to make when you're vulnerable, isolated, and craving acceptance/attention. Cycles of abuse happen and it takes a strong person to break them. Harry was obviously much stronger than Snape for overcoming his abuse. Snape failed. People do. He just didn't have the support he needed (yes, he had Lily but one person is rarely enough). The fact that Petunia had people around her who loved her and took care of her makes me less inclined to forgive her feelings towards Lily and her treatment of Harry.

Why should either of them be forgiven, though?

Honestly, it seems like you think that you're agreeing with the secret (petunia and snape have fucked up in similar ways), but the way it comes across is you taking a shit on Petunia. I'm seriously not trying to be argumentative or mean, I'm just saying that this is what people think you are doing which is why you are having lots of disagreement!

I'm really just replying to all the other comments that have been posted by people who think that by saying that Snape can also be forgiven/more easily forgiven, I'm trying to sanctify him, which I've continually pointed out that I'm not doing. A lot of those people are very much of the "Forgive Petunia if you must for how she treated Lily/Harry but never forgive Snape" mentality and my attempts to point out the often-overlooked root causes of Snape's ass-hattery and cruelty apparently made me out to be someone akin to a Snape-wife (which makes me shudder).

I don't think people are saying Petunia should be forgiven while Snape shouldn't. They're agreeing with the secret, which points out that only Snape's situation is forgiven by fandom when they're BOTH awful people. But you just essentially admitted to going on a crusade here against those people. And you wonder why you're coming across as a Snape wife? Really?

People are already well and fully aware of why Snape was so fucked up and abusive, ok? It's all in the books, and even moreso in fandom. They're AGREEING WITH THE SECRET, and discussing WHY Petunia is no worse than Snape but gets treated as so. I have yet to see anyone who has screamed that Snape should rot in hell while Petunia should be absolved, ffs. But then, I haven't been obsessing over this comment thread like you appear to have been.

See? That's why you come across like a Snape wife.

I made a point about why I would more easily forgive Snape than Petunia if I had to choose and several people replied to me with very different opinions. That's what I meant when I said I was responding to them. I didn't just start reply to everyone's comments.

Most are my comments are saying the same thing to different people. If it looks obsessive, then that's why. Because I'm repeating myself over and over to people who didn't read my replies to other people.
