I don't think I was being weird, but I was picking at a pet peeve. "Begging the question" is a phrase that is correctly used in debates when someone makes a circular argument. People often use it as you did, but I assure you, "one might ask why" is not what it means. It's a pet peeve, I probably shouldn't have answered at all but it makes me twitchy.
