I have to admit I'm not wholly sold on the Emily/Paige storyline (and don't watch Glee so can't comment the comparison) but I fully agree that the PLL writers seem so far at least to be writing Emily as a realistic and strong character without letting her sexuality define her.

[identity profile] ilikehumanflesh.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-20 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't particularly agree but you do have a point.

I also saw that Emily/Paige kiss from the second she got into the car because of the Kurtofsky one. :/

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm about as uncomfortable with the plotline as I am with the one on Glee. I guess when I'm assured that Emily and Paige are not going to hook up (because Paige tried to drown her) I'll be more sold on it. It is being handled better than the Glee one though, but PLL's writing/character development is miles ahead of Glee's.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-20 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not familiarized with Pretty Little Liars, so I can't comment on how the storyline is being handled. But just because Kurt had a strong support force in his family is he supposed to take all the "bulliyng that came in his way", as you said? As some of the people in fandom have noted, Kurt wasn't planning on doing anything about the bullying before and even after Karofsky kissed him. It was when Karofsky threatened his life and started acting creepily around him that he became a "whiny crybaby".

So, different people have different reactions to similar situations. It doesn't mean the someone is better that the other because of it.

Yeah, I was about to agree with this secret until that "can't handle an ounce of bullying" part. Not only did Kurt put up with a lot from Karofsky before he changed schools, let's not forget that he went through a fair amount of bullying before Karofsy even came into the picture. Heck, he being bullied--and handling it pretty well--when we first meet him!

OMG. Moze is in something else now? Don't watch Pretty Little Liars, did watch Ned's Declassified and thought it was brilliant, and I loved Moze. Does she do well acting-wise in Pretty Little Liars?

[identity profile] iteari.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know OP. It sounds like PLL has stronger writing than Glee, but I'm not sure I like the whole tone of "If the victim responds like that, then another victim should behave that way!" this secret is playing.

Very much oppression Olympics.....

THIS!

So you don't actually know what you're talking about. Irrespective of your actual opinion.

Awesome anon. Awesome

Dave Karofsky & Paige McCullers: Why they are not the same and never should be compared, ever.

Not mine, but I feel it needs to be posted:

Glee is not good at handling serious issues as far as I can see. PLL is all about the drama and the serious story lines.

[identity profile] zombossified.livejournal.com 2011-02-21 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
...He's a "whiny baby" for being upset that people physically assault and degrade him?

You're really stupid and/or an asshole.

[identity profile] tipsy-armadillo.livejournal.com 2011-02-21 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think the point they were trying to get across is that one character when faced with a similar situation but with MUCH less of a support group stayed strong while Kurt, with an enormous support group and people willing to go out on a limb for him completely crumbled under pressure.

[identity profile] zen_raven.livejournal.com 2011-02-22 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
When adults allow people to abuse them physically, emotionally and sexually, we call them masochists. Yet we expect kids to not only take it, but lose respect for them when it finally gets to be too much? That's just fucked up. Kurt went through a serious trauma of almost losing his only parent just weeks before his bully stepped it up until Karofsky was eventually issuing death threats, and then when he tried to get help, the system totally failed him by allowing his abuser to return to school, and you think he's weak?

[identity profile] wottie.livejournal.com 2011-02-21 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that the similarities are there, but I find Paige both a lot more sympathizable and a lot more realistic. Also, I really don't think Paige means to be a bully, either about Emily's sexuality or her swimming - it's just that Paige is crazy competitive and it leads itself to dangerous outlets.

All this though is really to say that PLL is way more fun and way better done than Glee and also, Emily is much, much hotter than Kurt and Karofsky combined.

[identity profile] cravatfiend.livejournal.com 2011-02-21 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
First off, I agree that PLL is doing a good job. However:

Please be careful when saying what you think a character should be able to 'handle' when it comes to serious bullying. People are different, situations are different and so are characters. What matters here is not bullying someone because you don't think they're being strong enough, even if they are fictional. A lot of people have behaved like Kurt in such situations, and they probably don't take kindly to your comment. I don't think you meant to be cruel but it kind of comes off that way.

Also you should probably catch up with Glee, they started getting over the whole 'Kurt show' thing. In fact the last episode was entirely Kurt free ;)

(Anonymous) 2011-02-22 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
it is still the Kurt Hummel Show.
and it is annoying. seriously annoying... besides Murphy is living vicariously through the character of Kurt.

and we all know that murphy ruined popular and he'll ruin glee.
