It could have been hilarious, but it wasn't anything the writers did that got me into Supernatural. I loved it because it was such a magpie, with bits and pieces of scenes, and props, and set design, and costumes, and music, and shots, and expressions stolen from everywhere. The crew and the directors get so much love from me. And because of the actors: not just the main characters, although I think their friendship has probably hugely informed their performances, which makes me actually care about what happens to the brothers; I loved the cameos and the people in peril.

So, I doubt I'd have loved the books without the show, because it would just have been the writing.
