Okay, let's take a new perspective.

1. You tell people they MUST use ONLY software they have the rights to use (if it's freeware/opensource or if they have paid for it, it's the same thing).
2. To make derivative works from works they have NO right to use.

Hyprocrite, much?

I don't know the fandom(s) for which you're making fanart or icons or whatever. MOST writers/mangakas/studios DON'T give their fans the right to make derivative works. They may close an eye and pretend it's fine, but it's hard to find one fandom which is actually encouraged to do so. Or in which you can say "the WSJ said it's fine and legal to write Naruto fanfiction."

Even if you PAY for the software you're using, you have not paid THE ARTISTS/COPYRIGHT HOLDERS of the work you're emulating. What's worst?

Have you written to the copyright holders and asked for their permission to make derivative works?

Yes-> Okay, continue to make strange crusades. And I hope you include a "I send Masashi Kishomoto a letter and he told me he had no problems with my fanart," just so we know.

No-> Then shut the fuck up.

One way or another you're doing something "barely legal". You can say you don't use your icons or whatever you do to make money, and thus you don't need the permission of (or to pay to) the copyright holders of the original works. But then the same thing applies to the software. You're not using it for profit, so it should be okay to use it without paying the licence. Understood?

Plus, honestly, the software companies have TERRIBLE business models. SuSE, Mandriva and Fedora have already proven that you can commercialize OpenSource software related products.

Information, and creativity, should be FREE and easily available. There's no reason for us to be fighting for the enterprises' rights when they have made their products almost impossible to get them by legal means.
