If there's a pairing that fanon just kind of agrees is together, they will often pop up in fics unannounced. House/Wilson is a big offender of this.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-16 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah Spock/Kirk writers will sometimes forget to label their fics as such. I'm pretty sure they all got together, took a vote and decided it was canon.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-16 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I was not included in this vote, probably because I would have disagreed. :\ Out of curiosity, what pairings have background K/S? Call me crazy, but most pairings without Kirk or Spock in them don't tend to be as popular, so you must be seeing it in Sulu/Chekov...and I never have. I'm a bit confused.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-16 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's not fics with background K/S. It's K/S fics, not labeled as K/S. Because they appear to think they are the little train that could, and they thought hard enough, and made K/S actually canon. I remember this wank vividly: their response was that if Spock/Uhura didn't have to label, they didn't have to label either.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-16 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That just seems silly from all sides, and again, I was not part of that wank. I think I'm being misrepresented by some of the louder fans, which is just a shame.

I'm not even in this fandom, but why would one pairing have to label and another not? That seems discriminatory (and reminds me of the 90s when slash had to be "warned" for and labeled NC-17 even if they were just kissing). Please tell me I misunderstood you.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

Background Spock/Uhura in reboot fics would be canonical. But it doesn't really matter because I've only ever seen K/S shipper fics unlabeled. (I don't know where anon seemed to get the idea Spock/Uhura shippers do it? Maybe in their own comm?)

See, I personally think it's because many K/Sers just crosspost the headers they made for their insular closed-off kirkspock comm and can't, and don't bother to, conceive of a world outside of it.

THEY KEEP DOINGGGGGGGGGG IT

You want examples. I have them. go to [livejournal.com profile] st_reboot (or [livejournal.com profile] newtrekslash) and scroll through for more.

I took a look at those posts you linked. Every single one is tagged with "Kirk/Spock". Yeah, it's not in the header, but the information is definitely there - it's not like they're deliberately misleading you.

The reliance on tags is a little annoying, I guess, but I've seen a whole bunch of Kirk/McCoy fics that do exactly the same thing.

Well then, K/Mc shippers are officially just as bad.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. IME, the "shipping goggles" are rarely limited to a specific pairing.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I think all pairings need to be labeled, canon or not - of established characters, I mean. Original characters, the fans don't know them anyway, so it really doesn't matter (although het and slash should be included if it's 'ship fic with OCs). We had a brief tussle in my old fandom where there were a few writers of this one non-canon 'ship (that they DESPERATELY wanted to be canon) who would include the label of their 'ship along with the canon 'ship they hated - implying both were represented - but when you opened the story, the canon male love interest was usually being bashed or he wasn't even really present in the story. It was done to lure in fans of that other 'ship and "dare them" to complain about it.

Fourth-graders have nothing on some adult 'shippers ...
