Not all published authors publish their photos, don't they?

But anyway I'd only have respect for an author who was open about their fandom past/present. I mean, why can't people be open about this stuff.

Not all published authors publish their photos, but the more successful ones do TV interviews and conventions and things. Also, there's a difference between being open about fandom ("Yeah, I've written fanfiction") and being in your face about it ("Yeah, I've written fanfiction. Here's a link to my Harry Potter porn.")

OP seems reasonable enough to me.
