Go hang out on /a/ or /co/ and enjoy being told to go back to the kitchen, then

(Anonymous) 2011-03-16 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Let me guess, you're one of the women who discover 4chan for the first time and immediately make a post and conspicuously include your gender in it.

The whole point of 4chan is to be anonymous. Giving away your gender chips away at that anonymity, and you will rightly be called out on it. On 4chan, yeah, unless you're on /y/ or /cm/ everyone basically assumes you're a dude, but what's so bad about that? You call attention to the fact you're female, then they'll (probably quite rightly) think you're attention-mongering.

TL;DR- You don't give away personal information on 4chan. Even your gender.

everyone basically assumes you're a dude, but what's so bad about that?

Seriously?

You seriously can't see the problem with allowing 'male' to remain the default gender? And that asserting yourself as an 'other' (non-male) will automatically get you dog-piled with sexist comments? NOPE, NOTHING WRONG HERE.

I'm too fucking tired for this.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-03-16 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
But what if the default gender is "I don't care unless you make a point of it"? There are parts on the internet (and life) where gender has like zero relevance. In life, you do not have the luxury of appearing no-gendered...in cyberspace you do, and that's a good thing...

[identity profile] radio-nurse.livejournal.com 2011-03-16 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh believe me, I am all for gender-neutral spaces, being genderqueer and all. It was the 'there is nothing wrong with having male as the default' part of the comment I was taking issue with.

And yeah, there are parts of life/internet where gender is a key player, but honestly, gender is the most defining thing in our society, so there's not going to be a lot of them. A space where people feel like they can't or aren't allowed to even mention their gender when it IS relevant is also problematic, as far as I'm concerned.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, fair enough, that is problematic...

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, because a lot of 4chan users are male? They will automatically assume that almost everyone who posts there is male. And there's really no point to assert your gender on 4chan, unless, like I said, you're trying to get attention, and that goes for male or female, since most users don't mention it at all. Like I said, there's a default that one expects most users to be male, but that comes from a majority of users being one gender. In sfd_anon everyone pretty much expects that any user there is female, and anyone who admits otherwise gets basically the reverse 4chan treatment.

On 4chan, it's not a problem IF YOU DON'T SAY WHAT YOUR GENDER IS. Did you completely miss the rest of my comment, where I said that revealing your gender chips away at anonymity? Which is the POINT of places like 4chan? You'll get ridiculed if you admit your gender there, and rightly so, because the site thrives on anonymity.

why do i feel like i'm going to regret this

[identity profile] radio-nurse.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
You'll get ridiculed if you admit your gender there, and rightly so, because the site thrives on anonymity.

This could just be an issue of what parts of the site of I've seen - I mostly just hit up /a/ and /x/ when I used to go on 4chan. Never once did I see someone get ridiculed for mentioning they were male. I understand that being all 'HEY GUYS LOOK I'M A CHICK' is silly, but when I was around, /a/ did have a lot of discussions about sex, sexuality, gender, etc. So yeah, I think that would be a relevant time to mention one's gender - and yet no, if someone mentioned being a woman they'd be ridiculed. These are my experiences with the site, and it's entirely possible yours are different, but this is the perspective I am coming from.

I didn't miss the point of your comment. This anonymity you praise so highly and want to preserve loses some of its meaning when it actually /is/ assigned a gender, so it isn't the true anonymity you think it is.

Re: why do i feel like i'm going to regret this

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Well, 4chan kept me sane in my first year of university when I really, really hated my neighbors, my classes, my roommates... everything. 4chan always managed to cheer me up. But I never felt the need to chip away at my anonymity and admit what my gender was (for the record: I'm female).

And not all of 4chan is that way. People tend to think of /b/ and /v/ as being all of 4chan, but the rest of the site is quite different. Most of /y/ and /cm/ are female, and there's a pretty good amount of women in /d/. And even in like /co/ YMMV, depends if you catch them in a bad mood.

I think this is one of those times where your results may vary wildly. I've mentioned that I'm a girl (usually in threads where it's specifically asked) and the only comment on it I've gotten was something like "Holy shit, women really do love FKMT."

[identity profile] doktordeathray.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well-phrased.
Seriously, every time I see someone say "HEY, FEMANON HERE" I die a little of secondhand embarrassment.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you are a good fit for 4chan then, because half the fun is watching the rage of a bunch of 20+ y/o fatass virgins. I'm firmly convinced that if you go to 4chan for any other reason than to laugh at the freaks, you're as broken as they are.

I do hate it when its like "femanon here, stop giving me a ~bad name~ among my fatass weeaboo knights" Like I am going to give a shit.

[identity profile] doktordeathray.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
And the fact that you assume 4chan as a whole is mostly made up of "20+ y/o fatass virgins" proves to me that you haven't spent enough time on there to even know what you're talking about. The demographics vary like crazy between the boards, and there are... I think forty boards, give or take ten?
I tend to find /b/tards pretty obnoxious, but I'm just as "broken" [lulz] as everyone else on the boards I visit, sure. Primarily /x/, and I adore some of those people- I'm not some jackass who goes on there ~ironically~.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I mostly hang out on /adv/ (and /r9k/ R.I.P.), which I consider to be the height of most perfect broken male humanity. Full grown men who act like the most insecure and naive of 14 y/o girls.

/a/ used to be similar though I think the mods started cracking down and it lost most of the fun. /v/ I heard can be pretty pissy when it comes to ~girls who like video games~ so I would like to go there sometime though not sure how to make it subtle enough.

Love the Boogiepop avatar, btw. One of the few decent anime.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
No, actually, I've never mentioned my gender on 4chan. The unabashed misogyny convinced me it would be a pretty shitty idea.
