You know what, I just re-read the original question and realised I for some reason completely misinterpreted it to read 'what are race relations like in the UK?' or something similar. This makes the first part of my post pretty much irrelevant.

Second part stands, though - the British Empire had a nasty little habit of landing somewhere, calling it theirs and taking everything away from the natives. Some of them would go to live in the new place (Americans may recognise this as the first step in how the USA came to be). In terms of the Natives, we'd either kick 'em off their land, make 'em slaves, or both.

But as has been pointed out, all this happened far away from Britain itself, so it wasn't so, erm, noticeable. There were some slaves in England, but nowhere near as many as in the US. Thus, there was never really a civil rights movement here and there's much less public awareness of the whole racist/imperialist background. Like I said, a lot of people don't even know that much about any of it.
