Sounds like you do, actually, you just don't agree.

You're really saying that A CORNERSTONE of slash is to do something non-canon? like some kind of mini-rebellion? Because that's what I get from that statement, and I'll assure you: Not all slashers are 13 years old and ~out to make a point.~ Most people do it because they get something fulfilling out of it, and a lot of them would be quite happy if it actually was canon.

I don't think that's what you were trying to say though, so??

Well, yeah, as far as I can tell, one of the main reasons people write fic is to explore stuff that hasn't been done in the show/movie/book. There's plenty of canon-fic out there, sure, but I would assume the majority of slash out there is non-canon and/or between non-gay characters (if only because the majority of characters out there in the world aren't gay). And besides, if you pair up two characters of the same gender who aren't together in canon but are both gay, is that even slash? Isn't that just... regular shipping? I've always thought slash implied "I'm reading more into this relationship than is 'technically' true because I see potential for one reason or another." I suppose there's no hard-and-fast rule, but I get the impression a lot of people subscribe to this theory. And as far as making a point--well, personally I don't see slash as being about gay or straight anyway. I mean to say, if I write slash about someone who is canonically straight, I'm not saying "they are now gay or bi." I'm saying "they have a special connection with this other person and I think it will play itself out romantically/sexually." But, again, everyone has their own interpretation, I guess. *kanyeshrug*
