Not too sure about your Roman Empire = British Empire thing... The Romans have always been popular and well-known in their own right here. (probably more so than colonialist Britain)

The "What have the Romans ever done for us?" scene from Life of Brian is a not-so-oblique reference to the British Empire's activities in India, etc.

Really? I think you might be reading too much into that one. The Pythons were all very well educated, most of them Classically. I think they would have known more jokes about the Roman Empire than the British one, to be very honest. And I am saying this as a British desi.
