Ehmmm...maybe you're having a social life with people who are not actually great friends material, and that you have little in common with?

It's a perfectly normal response to hide it, some fandom-related things do sound rather absurd/shameful/geeky/etc to people who aren't in fandom. I definitely hide it myself. It's safer to just have internet friends to share it with. But it all comes down to the fact that you have different friends for different reasons.

To me, those aren't friends. They may be shoes, tops, or hair-clips but I like my friends to be all-weather.

Truth be told, I think that even if they don't care about fandom, real friends should accept you (generic you) do, and not judge you about it. And if fandom is as big a part of your life as it is mine, then you shouldn't hide it from people you consider friends. If my RL friends didn't know about fandom, I'd have had a hard time explaining to them the number of foreign people at my wedding...

Personally I think if a person feels they need to hide fandom interests from their friends then I don't see how they have a really strong friendship. A true friend would still support you even if they don't really get it or share the same interest. At least that how I see it but I'm from the school of having a few really good friends than a bunch of people who you really don't know at all.

No, not fandom specifically. But OP sounds like they're making themselves out to be something they're not in front of their friends, and that doesn't sound like a great friendship situation to me...
