OP

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Why would I be offended by bisexuals when I am one? You really shouldn't assume so much.

It's not just that she was/is attracted to two girls, it's the absolute absence of any attraction to guys. There are eight of them in the proper age range, several of whom she has platonic friendships with, but not a single one of whom has she ever sought for a redrom. Her attraction to girls (and in canon, as far as we've seen, only girls) is a major part of her character.

I honestly don't get why certain fans selectively ignore the formspring stuff. It's the creator's supplemental explanations on canon events, how is that not acceptable as canon? We accept interviews with writers and actors of other fandoms as canon information about the characters and plot, so what makes this different? (And yes, he says that "lesbian" and "homosexual" are meaningless concepts for the trolls, but he also says outright that she is only attracted to girls, which is considered unusual in troll society, and from a human point of view, she can definitely be considered gay.)

Most of the Kanaya/any male justification I've seen seems to be of the "well Hussie says she's a lesbian but what does he know anyway" brand of stupid. She's his character, if anyone has the right to make definitive declarations on her sexuality, it's him.

Her attraction to girls is a major part of her character

sorry to step in but um no it's not

her wishy-washiness in relationships is a major part of her character
her attraction to people she wants to pacify and shouldn't get involved with is a major part of her character

the gender of the two people she is attracted to in story is not a major part of her character. also it's two fucking people, oh my god, it's two girls in sequence, she must be a lesbian.

i don't read the formspring because it's some interesting information packed in with a clusterfuck of dumb questions and honestly i just want to ship characters i think would have good personality compatibility regardless of what a formspring question says. i'm sorry but i don't think that means i'm a terrible person who is erasing a gay character's whole identity. i still think of her as a bisexual who prefers girls so i don't know how i'm erasing her gayness to begin with.

driveby question

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
How many women do I have to date before I'm a lesbian?

Re: driveby question

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
You're a lesbian whenever you say you're a lesbian.

But lesbian =/= exclusively into women. AND THEN! People get hilariously defensive about words that mean different things to different people.

Re: driveby question

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
In the sense of defining oneself, yes. But a fictional character can't really define themselves in the same way. If the character never outright states this as exposition, does it still count? If the author defines them as a lesbian, is that not good enough? Or is lacking a word for it in the character's language more meaningful?

Re: driveby question

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
The creator defines the character. If the creator says she's a lesbian, she's a lesbian.

Re: driveby question

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
But since it's not part of the narrative proper, people choose to disregard it. Meh, fandom.

And some fans like to pretend the HP Epilogue isn't canon. Fans are silly :P

Re: driveby question

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
um none? but being in two relationships with women doesn't mean you only like girls either is all i'm saying, kanaya doesn't define herself in the story proper as girls-only so for people who don't read formspring there is nothing to say that it's against the rules to think she might develop feelings for a guy sometime.

also i don't need think i should need to justify ships to you because shipping is a stupid activity to begin with. if i keep to myself and realise it's not canon why can't i have fun with these characters?

Re: driveby question

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I just asked a question, not saying you should justify anything. There's nothing wrong with noncanon ships.

However - are you saying it would actually take, telling not showing, Kanaya up and saying By The Way I Only Like Girls Just So You Know? Because if that's so, how do you ever know someone is straight--

Ah. I now understand shipping completely.

Still OP

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Please don't take my words out of context. I said her attraction to girls and only girls as far as we have seen. Show me one single moment where she's shown a flushed interest in a guy.

If a character only shows romantic interest in one gender in canon, it can be assumed that that is the only gender they are attracted to unless/until that is proven untrue.

And in what twisted universe is a person's sexuality not an important part of who they are?

You are deliberately ignoring the creator's canonical statements on her character, so yeah, I still think you're an idiot and an asshole.

See, you're homophobic because you think sexuality is important. I don't even see orientation!

Re: Still OP

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah.

I'm also a misogynist because I hated Vriska for a while, and a misandrist because I hated Eridan even more.

And a budding psychopath, because I stopped hating them as much after the latter's death and the former's realization that "hey, maybe killing people is kinda bad!"

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you know fans. If they have to read something extra, it doesn't count. Which is the equivalent of a Doctor Who fan calling Matt Smith the third Doctor just because they can't/won't watch the rest of the show.

And the idea that not wanting a lesbian paired off with guys is bisexual erasure is laughable, because in most fics I'd bet her previous attractions to girls aren't mentioned at all, making the whole thing come off as a heteropalooza anyhow.
