If a fandom's source material does not explicitly confirm a character's sexual orientation, does that mean we are to assume they're straight until proven gay? And even so, we've seen in reality that there are people who have lived "straight" lives for a portion of their adult lives, without accepting or acknowledging their sexual attraction to the same gender. Happens all the time: people "realizing" they're gay, or living a "straight" life to conform to social norms and then finally having enough of that one day. Why can't that happen with fictional characters?
This is not even addressing the concept that a character could be bisexual, or any other level on the Kinsey scale, that just wasn't mentioned in the source material because they couldn't cope with it/were a minor character not developed fully/was too busy fighting dragons or saving the world or some shit.
