And because we never had the slavery at home, we never really developed the one-drop stuff, or the same stereotypes, or the same idea of white/black being the basic division. Nor did we develop quite the same conception of race based solely on the apparent skin colour, nor the legislated racial discrimination.

It also means that, until very recently, a British programme set in Britain that only included 'white' characters was accurately reflecting the vast, vast majority of the country.
