Something like this happened to me, once. I had a friend from a certain fandom, we drifted apart, and when she contacted me after a year or so, I was excited and brushed up on the old fandom so we'd have something to talk about. Unfortunately, she was no longer into the fandom at all, and I was head over heels for it again. In fact, I'm pretty sure my renewed avid obsession with the fandom made us split up again. :\
