I watched the TV anime and the lack of any sort of bonding between the pilots, the long segment of planes flying through the sky, and the cheesy love story with the wallflower, off screen female character turned me off. It's also an older anime (I could be wrong about that, just judging by the style,) and relatively obscure, that could contribute to the lack of fandom.
