I've only seen the OVAs. The TV anime turns me off for some reason.
Still, I like those characters (though I can't ship Shin with anyone).

*flails* OMG, an Area 88 secret?! Okay, so it's for the recent TV series -- I'm more of a fan of the OVA (though I do love both the manga and the TV series as well) -- but my day has still been made.

A fandom would be cool, yeah. If there was one maybe I'd get off my lazy butt and write that twisted Kanzaki/Shin story that I've always wanted to do.

I have a feeling I'd probably love the manga the most too, if I only I didn't have to rely on picture-reading it so much :\ It's a pity that it was never fully translated in a language I know, I feel like I'm missing out on so much... The same goes for the series she did with Fumimura Shou; Phantom Burai. I don't know if you're familiar with that one, but if not I really recommend it!

I watched the TV anime and the lack of any sort of bonding between the pilots, the long segment of planes flying through the sky, and the cheesy love story with the wallflower, off screen female character turned me off. It's also an older anime (I could be wrong about that, just judging by the style,) and relatively obscure, that could contribute to the lack of fandom.

Actually, the TV anime is quite recent (it came out sometime in the 2000s), it's the manga and original OVA that's old.

Not going to lie, the main appeal of the series is its admirably realistic depictions of mid-70s air combat and aircraft. As with any realistic portrayal of warfare, this can lead to some boring bits. In terms of pilot interaction, one of the strong points for me was actually how well the show managed to convey and develop pilot relationships through their actions and dispositions in combat rather than through explicit dialogue, but that's pretty subjective sooo

I'm assuming you must have been involved in some way with the aircraft industry/field. If not, I'm sorry for misunderstanding. I've had my share of airplanes, though nothing close to combat, but I know right off the bat it's boring if any story decides to present in a realistic light.

I just didn't like it. The story moved too slow.

Area 88! I loved the manga so much way back when! (I still have a box of my old single-issue comics of it.) I never realized there was an anime or OVAs for it, somehow. Thank you, OP, for giving me something new to watch! I wish I could give you a shiny fandom in return.
