OP: The only thing I'd have gotten out of being linked to a story was either: 1) you liked it or 2) You thought I would like it. It wouldn't even occur to me that you'd be trying to send any deeper message than that, and I certainly wouldn't be able to guess that you say me and yourself as parallels of the characters.

Hinting, not the best strategy. And sometimes it fails spectacularly. Best to be upfront, or at least point to it and say why you're pointing to it so they know what to look for. They don't have the same lens you do, the same self-consciousness.
