Interesting idea!

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
That's actually very interesting.

As an Alice fan, I didn't like the movie. But I guess it's nice that it got you thinking.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol what?

Oh. I'm sorry. You're a 'real' Alice fan. At least that horrible movie made all these little fake Alice fans think. Something good came out of it.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Go read the books, they're much better. The movie was just disjointed references without understanding the point of the source material.

[identity profile] myonlylight.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, super condescending!

As an Alice fan, I fucking love that movie.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry but I really feel that the books are just plain better. The movies managed only to loosely connect some of the iconic images of the series without capturing its spirit. I was just disappointed.

I agree.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
... well, it's better than fire and brimstone? Maybe people say gays are going to hell just because they think gay people throw really excellent tea parties.

...But that hell would probably be awesome and drama-filled, like a fandom.

... FANDOM IS HELL!

OH GOD, WE'VE CRACKED THE CODE. D8

I think that movie adaptation was Carrol's idea of hell.

But given that Dodgson was painfully shy around adults, he may have found tea parties very agitating and hellacious. I rather think that he would have used a stodgy adult dinner party if that's what he was going for, though. He seems to use the tea party as an exercise in childlike absurdity.

[identity profile] puddinchan.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
IAWTC. I disliked that film and Johnny Depp's randomly appearing/disappearing Scottish accent.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably, yeah. I used to despise the tea parties I was forced to attend when I was a child. Those were some of the most pretentious, awful social meetings I've ever had the displeasure of knowing. I hate to think how much worse they used to be about a hundred years ago or so.

This just gave me plot bunnies. Thanks.

That's an interesting idea. The whole thing was kind of an underworld, maybe that was the "eternal torment" area.

[identity profile] unifilar.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm, makes sense. I only like a really specific kind of tea, so being forced to drink it for eternity would SUCK.

I think the whole Alice world was definitely a dystopia. The frantic rabbit always struck me as a tragic character and trapped in his own personal hell. Perpetually late, has no power over what happens in his life, and always serves others. Sounds hell-ish to me.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Interestingly, I never really got this sense when reading the book. The characters seemed part of the tea party, like moving parts of a larger machine. It's really only when I was watching Burton's movie did I think, "Whoa, this is a lot like Sartre's No Exit."

Supposedly, the whole point of the Alice books was to demonstrate the absurdity of new mathematics. Can't really point to specifics with the tea party scene, but parts with the Griffin and the Mock Turtle (you know, the characters that no one ever bothers to include in their adaptations for stupid reasons) definitely have that going on.

[identity profile] wrestlingdog.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
...Huh. That makes a lot of sense.

[identity profile] fictionalbf.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree completely. The tea party in the books always seemed like a nightmare to me (and not in a metaphorical sense, as in it was actually like a nightmare where you have no control over what's happening and no idea what'll happen next), and the way they played it in the movie really made it seem like some sort of eternal torment.

However, now my enjoyment of tea is going to be slightly marred. :(

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
This is now my headcanon.

[identity profile] lesbido.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard of that interpretation before...of the books...

[identity profile] myonlylight.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I really like this. I'm adopting it as my own head!canon.

[identity profile] sindragosa.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
Spending an eternity with Derp!Hatter WOULD be my personal hell. D:
