I just got a DSi last week. I was going to wait for the 3DS but a friend of mine in Japan told me that when you turn the 3D option off (as I would most likely do, I mean, my eyesight is bad enough as it is, and I don't care for 3D) that the screen looks really blurry and shitty. Also, I'm not really interested in any of the new games coming out.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The video game industry has two main threats to it right now: used games, and pirating. In regards to used games, when you go to Gamestop and you purchase a game used, do you know who gets 100% of the profit off that game? Gamestop. Those who actually produced the game get absolutely nothing. Put that in with the fact that Gamestop still gets a fraction of the sales off new games, and all of the people that pirate . . .

Video game companies aren't like musicians. They don't have live shows to get large sums of money from. All they have are new game sales. Considering how expensive it is just to make one game, not to mention localize it, and you have industries that are going downhill fast. Namco-Bandai is EXTREMELY close to going under. The money-hungry companies like Activision are snapping up companies left and right, but other companies like Nintendo and Sony are flipping out and either region-locking everything with threat of bricking or filing lawsuits against everyone they can find. Why? Because they don't want to go under. They don't want to be like Namco-Bandai, who laid off thousands of workers because they couldn't afford to pay them anymore, nor do they want to be like Sega, who pretty much lost everything way back when.

I'm sorry OP, but I can't feel bad for you. I agree that the region-locking on the 3DS sucks because I really want to play the Tales of the Abyss port, but I can't support video game piracy at all. Not when video games mean so much to me, not when that's an industry I want to go into (in the localization department), and not when the industry itself is hurting so much right now from the likes of Gamestop and piracy.

Okay... How is Gamestop selling a used game any different than any other video game store reselling a used game? Or a person giving their used game to a friend who wants to play it? Or someone selling their used games on Craigslist?

Publishers of books make no money from used bookstores, record companies make no money from people selling old CDs. This happens in every media in existence.

I agree with you on the pirating issue, but freaking out about used games is ridiculous.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, there's no difference in other game stores selling used games and Gamestop selling used games. :) I wasn't trying to say that at all. Gamestop is just the first that came to mind because it's "eaten," so to speak, so many other game stores that I was familiar with from my childhood: EB Games, FuncoLand, Babbages, Game Crazy, etc. They all either went out of business or were absorbed by Gamestop, and since Gamestop is now the major store in my area, that's the first one that came to mind.

Reading the rest of your message, though, I'm unsure whether you're just angry about me singling out Gamestop or if you're angry that I brought up used games in general. If it's the latter, then I'm sorry -- but it IS an issue. If you want, I can claw through the internet to find the article I read a couple weeks ago in which a video game developer lamented both piracy and used games, admitting that while he saw the benefit in used games, it was still hurting the industry. Yes, it's going to happen everywhere -- in Gamestop, in other small game stores until Gamestop eats them, on the internet, etc. -- but it still hurts.

And Hell, I'm not telling people not to buy used games, you know. I was merely pointing out that this DOES hurt the industry, and that piracy is therefore adding insult to injury by just making the problem worse.

I wasn't actually angry, just confused because you were singling out a single store chain. My local video game store is called GameCrazy, and I wondered if they'd get a pass for being an independent business. Besides, when you use lines like "the industry itself is hurting so much right now from the likes of Gamestop" it comes across as though you only care about the one chain.

I also find fretting about used games strange because you don't hear other media industries talking about used CDs/books/audiobooks being resold as a major issue. They're all about "piracy is evil and must be stopped!" I've never heard someone talking about used products damaging an industry before.

I wasn't angry. Just mystified.

Stop pirating, ya dope!

[identity profile] juandalyn.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
As you say, piracy is bad mmmkay.
But I'm pretty sure there will be new options for piracy on 3ds soon.

MTE, secret-poster. I only just got my flashcart, too! How am I supposed to play those games that I don't like enough to buy?

I know piracy is evilbad, and tbh I don't care -that- much, but my rationalization of it is this: if I play the game and I like it enough, I'll go out and buy it for real, or at least recommend it to my friends to go and buy. (Of course, they'll probably get it used, such is life.)

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't want a 3DS anyway, anon, and really don't after hearing the screen is crappy when the 3D is off. I am 100% with you on the flash cart. I finally got one and it is the love of my life. I don't feel bad for pirating on the DS. I'm a pretty law-abiding person in general and support games/franchises with new games when I'm able, but my flashcart has helped me narrow down game choices and has probably saved me $200 in buying games I discovered I hated and could never have stuck with. It's led to me buying a few games, too. That doesn't even out or "justify" it, but that's not my goal. If I wanted to always feel good about myself, I wouldn't have bought a flashcart in the first place. Not to mention Nintendo handhelds are a notorious dumping ground for buggy, terrible shovelware disguised as fun games.

Give it a year, anon. The 3DS price will be down, reviews will be out, and they'll have all the new stuff cracked. Then you can make a decision.

Aye, this is what I'm doing.

Originally I was planning to get it on launch but that was before I found out all the games I was looking forward to won't be released until E3. Maybe the screen isn't so bad when not in 3D, I think it's one of the things you need to check out for yourself. And yeah, you know the 3DS Lite or what have you won't be too far away. :P

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
It's what I always do. Since RPGs are my main interest, and they usually don't have one at launch and not a good one for a year or two after that, I'm never in a hurry. And by then, I know if the console is any good because half of my friends own one.

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Same, I've found I wait until a console has enough decent games that I can't avoid temptation anymore and just give. That's what happened with my Wii, nearly 4 years after its launch. No regrets. ^_^

Hell, I held off getting a DS for so long (mostly coz I was so attached to my old GBA and also coz few games appealed to me anymore) and now the wait seems to have paid off with the 3DS. And yet I'm still willing to wait :P

Reward my patience, Nintendo.

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Good. Videogames' sole source of income (most of the time) is direct sales. Not the case with shows, music, or movies.

The less videogame piracy, the better. The only game I pirated I purchased a month later because I dug it a lot. I can definitely see try before you buy, but other than that...no.

[identity profile] phaethon.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not condoning piracy, but I'm pretty sure a DS flashcart will still work. The rumor about Nintendo remotely bricking 3DSes with flashcarts is just that -- a rumor. No idea if there's truth to that yet.

On a semi-related note, I preordered the 3DS and can't fucking wait.

[identity profile] interrobangings.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
well it's a completely new system so

yeah it probably wouldn't work

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm I'm as pirate as they come but some of these posts are making me feel bad. Course it doesn't help that when I tried to buy a game (okay for wii, which is like efffing expensive) it "asked" to update which would have meant bricking my console. So I'm reselling that game I bought legit and brand new.

As for 3DS, I'm super excited but only going to get one when the release the new Professor Layton game translated in english. That's the only thing I'd want from it I think. I currently use the beloved 3DSi to read fanfiction :D Moonshell (v.1 has better layout then v.2), .txt files, try it.

Even better than those ereader thingies AND you can read in the dark.

[identity profile] deciphre.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
On a side note, apparently the Acekard 2i works on the 3Ds.
I have no clue if it supports 3Ds games, though.

Yeah. I've pirated before. Mostly to try out games. If they're good I buy them, and if they're crap I don't feel sad for spending forty dollars.
