Most you do will make you a "bad feminist" to someone.

I like him, too. Who cares.

[identity profile] eelsalad.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Sad but true. I'm a feminist but I do a LOT of things that make people tell me I'm a bad feminist. As long as you believe men and women are equal and fight in even a small way for that equality, you're a feminist in my book.

To the OP: There's no arguing with taste, you're gonna like what you like. I do find it kind of appalling that you don't see the sexism in his music, though. I mean, even setting aside the obvious anti-woman element in his music (http://www.jacksonkatz.com/eminem2.html), a 2008 study (http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/brainstorm/200805/does-listening-eminem-make-people-sexist) showed that listening to Eminem's music increased negative attitudes toward women in listeners.

[identity profile] tenonthedot.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Hnnnnnng~ I would so tap that.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I like some of his music, but I can admit that a lot of the lyrics are sexist and offensive. But just because it's offensive doesn't mean I can't enjoy it.

You can recognize the shitty things about something and yet still be a fan.

So yeah, if you had said you were a fan and recognized that he can be pretty offensive and sexist yet you still love his music, that would have been cool. But the fact that you can't see it at all? Yeah, you might be that "bad feminist" you speak of.

[identity profile] i-am-a-rose-4.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
This is what I came here to say. I'm not a fan of his, and being a fan itself doesn't make you a 'bad feminist.' But to not recognize the sexism in some if his lyrics at all? Yeah, something is going on there...

[identity profile] closetospring.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, this. it's hard to find anything that's not problematic in some way, so most of us will like something that has issues. but denying there's any issue is a whole 'nother story.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
ehhh. I know he can be offensive as fuck and I still like him.

[identity profile] chelonianmobile.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as you realise that the attitudes portrayed in the songs shouldn't be applied to real life, I don't see the harm. Hell, according to my university paperwork I'm technically disabled, and yet I listen to Evelyn Evelyn. And I adore murder ballads of any type, but I have yet to actually murder anyone. (Actually my anger management improved significantly when I started listening to violent music. Wonder if that means anything ...)

[identity profile] ilikesponges3.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that his music is a bit offensive and sexist but I choose to look past it since I'm been listening to him since I was 4. ^_^

[identity profile] anindeliblemark.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, being a female fan of Eminem is always something I've kept close to the vest--particularly because I have so many LGBT friends. Aside from the whole multiple-personas angle, it does seem like he's matured quite a bit in his attitudes, so I don't feel quite as bad as I once did. But it's still an issue I think about a lot.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I used to listen to his music a lot when I was thirteen. I never thought about the message of his words and how it effected women and men. My mom hated and I thought it was because she didn't understand.

But I'm sorry, his music is flat out sexist and homophobic.

"...or these bitches on my dick,
that's how dudes be getting sick, that's how dicks be getting drips, falling victims to this
shit, from these bitches on our dicks..." (Drips, Eminem Show)

How is that not sexist? He blames women for a lot of things, slut-shames, throws the F-word around (no I do not mean fuck, I mean the derogatory term used to refer to gay men), oh but he doesn't say the N-word so let's all applaud him.

Yes, he's a talented rapper, but in the end his lyrics are still sexist and homophic and incredibly damaging.

Leaving this here 'cause I just woke up from a nap and don't have the energy to keep talking about this: http://www.jacksonkatz.com/eminem2.html

oh but he doesn't say the N-word so let's all applaud him.

haha yeah that confused the fuck out of me when there was that tape he did and he said that word on it, and then it got out and he was apologizing so much and he was like "that was when i was a kid and it was a shitty thing to do but i don't think like that anymore" and somehow he still doesn't get that he can't say faggot. what a douchecanoe~

The reasons I haven't really wavered in my love could fill another page of secrets.

Oddly enough, that song Stan got me introduced to Dido's incredible music, so... thanks Em! :D

~it's not so baaaad~

[identity profile] siriuslynow.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
um, didn't he write a song about killing his ex-wife and stuffing her in the back of his car? and another song ~through the eyes~ of an abuser who ends up setting his gf on fire?

i mean, like the douche all you want, but those sound pretty sexist to me.

[identity profile] sxiz.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
it's such a shame that he's so fucking amazing artistically and his lyrics are all offensive as hell.

liking him doesn't make you a bad feminist, but not seeing the problems in his work? yeaaaaaaaah that might qualify you

[identity profile] itsqueenbecky2u.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, who ever posted this secret get out of my head. Cause damn, I feel the exact same way at times. But with less fear about being a bad feminist. Eminem is a freakin' genius, and given the shit he grew up with, having some homophobic and sexist songs isn't exactly surprising.

As for his sexy factor, his video for 3 AM is just ... Ugh....

Num num num.
