I could be wrong, but there's a series called the "foreign!verse" in the TGWTG fandom where an canon-American-born man (the guy in my icon actually) is for some reason given a South African background. I don't even read it, but there was a fic recently where he got abused by airport security and that may have caused some issues.

What fandom are you talking about? And why does it matter what people do in fanfiction to a character's nationality? Are we talking AU with different personality?

I am a caucasian South African. Based on that, without meeting me, would you automatically assume I was racist?

Oh! No, that wasn't what I meant at all. Sorry about that. It's an AU with only the loosest of ties to the original canon, and making the character South African, or indeed any other nationality without exploring what that does to the character and relationships that they have feels wrong to me. I'd feel the same with any nation-shift of a character.

IAWTC. Fellow Caucasian South African here. I definitely think the secret should have been worded better to not come off sounding like OP was generalising all white SAfricans as racist.
