(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)I have yet to watch the anime, but in the manga there is a character who points exactly the same thing, so what you're thinking makes sense even in canon even though if that's true for Takatsuki or not it's something we don't know yet.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)He's stated specifically that he wants a dick (chapter 90, page 11).
I think you, and people like you, forget that it's a story, not real life, and for this story, Takatsuki is definitely a trans man. I know fandom likes to play with things their own way, but when you do that to a character who is part of a nearly-invisible minority, it kind of pisses off the rest of us who identify with him, because when you invalidate his identity, it feels like you're invalidating ours as well.
I understand that finding androgynous characters to identify with is difficult, too, but stop projecting that onto a character that is just definitely not.

it's possible to read a text incorrectly, OP. that is what you are doing. i think that for the purposes of this story it's clear as can be that Takatsuki is/wants to be a guy.

I think that anyone who thinks that the two leads of that series are NOT trans is completely missing the point of the series.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 12:04 am (UTC)(link)I don't think that it's wrong to want to find someone to identify with, and I certainly don't see why the Trans community, or friends and allies of the Trans community, would tell you that it's not okay to say that the gender pronouns fandom is using makes you feel uncomfortable and alienated. And it bothers me that it has to be a secret, that this is something that we can only say anonymously.
In other fandoms (Phoenix Wright, Digimon, Gundam Wing, for example), I've seen people genderbend characters for the sake of a story. You know, saying things like, "I'd like to see this plot carried out with X as a girl," or "How would their relationship be different if Y was a boy?" I guess I'm just disappointed to learn that the Transient Son fandom isn't more understanding.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 12:58 am (UTC)(link)Even if you don't watch the anime, it's very, very heavily implied and stated that he wants to be a boy.

I was almost exactly like that at that age (at that EXACT age-- s/he's gone through some of the exact same things I had to deal with and has the same thoughts and does the same things) but I'm not a trans man today. Genderqueer, maybe, but not a man. Takatsuki may have said that, but ze's still growing up. There's plenty of room for him/her/(idk the pronouns, sorry guys ): ) to find out about hisself. It's a manga/anime about growing up more than anything, so this is why it could be debatable.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 02:38 am (UTC)(link)But what confuses me is whether Takatsuki should be referred to as male or female (at least at this point in the series, up to date with the anime). Should I use he, appropriately for Takatsuki's gender? Or, because Takatsuki is currently living as a girl and is not taking action to be recognised as a boy, should that be respected?
Usually in fandoms I would just match the gender and the pronoun regardless of anything else, but this time I don't know. Hourou Musuko just seems such a realistic series and I don't know what Takatsuki would want to be used.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-20 02:25 am (UTC)(link)This. Since Japanese doesn't have gendered pronouns, you can never really know they would want to be called anything but their physical gender unless they say so explicitly. It makes the discussions like these too awkward to come to a real conclusion, at least for me.
