I understand what you mean. my family is from Ukraine , and we moved during the time it was still apart of the Soviet Union. When I was in Hetalia fandom, I got a lot of people asking me if I wanted to RP Russia/America "hatesex" and Russia/Ukraine abuse type stuff (because we are Ukrainian) and it was what drove me out of fandom. It wasn't cool , and I said that , and people kept doing it. Just because it's history doesn't make it fair game , and finding out what it was like to personally have your history totally taken advantage of for some fangirl roleplays is not a good feeling at all.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
See, this is why I don't understand getting into Hetalia at all. Every nation has historical and current events that are extremely sensitive. I've only seen bits and pieces of the fandom, but Hetalia seems to need its fans to take history extremely lightly. And if you're taking history lightly, why would you take current events lightly?

I just -- I don't think it's right, and fandom should include respecting people and not upsetting them, but I don't think it should shock anyone this is happening. The fandom is based off of making history a comedy.

thiisssss

THANK YOU

SA, fixing a potentially confusing typo

*why wouldn't you take current events lightly?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
And the series is based off of making Japan sympathetic. Something the country will never be.

Go back to the troll cave darling.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Trolls don't live in caves, they live under bridges and eat goats. HAVE SOME GOATS TROLL.

I thought it was based on making Italy look like an idiot

Some things in history can be taken lightly, or made light of, without any problems. Others can't and shouldn't. The whole issue is where to draw the line, and some people out there have no concept of what the line even is :/

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
who gets to decide what that line is though?

the fandom is already slashing anthropomorphized countries with each other, its a pretty batty concept to begin with. People who died 100 years ago isnt any less tragic than people who died yesterday, calling time out to play morality police 3 years into fandom is whack.

you really don't see the difference between joking about history that happened, say, 100 years ago

and asking to roleplay a personal, recent tragedy?

[identity profile] ikkiuchi.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
*bows down*

This is one of the main reasons I left that fandom before I even could get started in it.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
As a fan of Hetalia who takes current events seriously, I would say the difference is that the emotions inspire by things recently happened, or still happening, are much fresher and rawer. I mean, people are still being buried in Japan. The tragedy is still unfolding.

Compare that to things like the second world war, which was 60 years ago. It was a terrible thing but most people alive now did not experience it firsthand and those that did have mostly come to terms with it.

So personal I don't use current events for fanfic or RP (unless it's a lighthearted news story) and I wish other fans would not either, but unfortunatly I can't control what people who like the same anime as me do.

I'm sorry that the OP's feeling were hurt, and sorry to any other people who see some insensitive fan exploiting their tragedy for fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
my country has still suffer being portrayed wrongly on its 150 anniversary by the creator, and fans who don't care about any history but their own country.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
oh god now it's the italians.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Bad already they played Oppression Olympics against people who have nothing.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
so your situation is as bad as suffering japanese?
nice to know only your country matters.

penso che facevate un piacere a tutti se non postavate cazzate simili in un momento del genere.

davvero di classe da parte vostra comparare la situazione del Giappone a quella del modo in cui è rappresentata l'Italia

attention-whore much?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Can you shut it just this once? Don't cause us more shame.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)

Mi state facendo vergognare da morire.

I'm Ukrainian, family has directly been affected by the famine and we are actively anti-Russian, and do RP Russia/Ukraine abuse type stuff and read such fics.

It just feels.... cleansing somehow to me, strictly personally.

But the people that keep harassing you about it even though you say you are not cool with that stuff are complete assholes.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm also from eastern european country and I don't mind RPing or ficcing some very tragic stuff that happened here. But I'd NEVER think of throwing things like that in people's faces. Everyone copes in different way and everyone has the right to find some things offensive or personally hurtful to them, we should all fucking respect that.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Very much agreed! Both on that different people cope in different ways, and about consideration.
