It's anything with gears, airships, flight goggles, and waistcoats, it seems.

I wonder if the steampunk genre isn't so shallow because the "canon" so to speak - The Difference Engine - was so uninspired and awful.

Hey, don't boil steampunk canon down to 'The Difference Engine'-- before 'steampunk' was ever a term, there were elements of what would become steampunk.

Jules Verne, HG Wells, 'La Voyage a la Lune'... there's a foundation that predates Gibson.
