Still I remember that at the time when scanlations where still new and done only in countable numbers and by small scanlation groups, that also mostly released through mirc... This was one of the few yaoi scanlations available on direct download out there...

So maybe it's 'popularity' has mostly to do with it's nostalgia factor, right along with being wellknown for basically being one of the few available 'hardcore' yaoi stories out there for that time.

I never in a million years thought I'd see this wonderful/terrible train wreck of a yaoi here. FFFFFFF.

Jesus. It's like so brilliantly horrifying and bad you want to go back in time and punch your old self in the face as a warning to not read it, but then you go to the Okane Ga Nai forums on Mangafox and they're totally hating on Ayase (the uke who gets brutally raped/emotionally messed with almost every other page,) because he can't get over his straightness and accept Kanou (violent seme who rapes Uke on daily/hourly basis and considers him property.) It's just, I don't know.

The only way I can explain the huge popularity is that I could be in a different dimension, reading a totally different manga that doesn't have Kanou ruining Ayase's life or Ayase being a total idiot and instead having them developing a healthy relationship not based on Stockholm Syndrome.

Or maybe the series has a bigger niche than expected?

The series is a hidden shota. The character is obviously draw to look younger on purpose (even the characters make mention of it) and the helpless that he exhibits is much like a child as well.

I mean I guess I'm kind of hypocrite-ish because I love a lot of anatomy fail manga, like Junjou Romantica and Love Mode, but I honestly do not see the appeal of Okane ga Nai. At all.

The thing that gets me about this series is that the seme is like a parody of himself--he does literally everything the bad guys do to Ayase, only more so. He says outright at one point that he wants to wipe all gay and trans people off the face of the earth. (He and Ayase are ~different~) He's probably one of the worst people I've ever encountered in fiction, but he's supposed to be sympathetic because he really wants to stop raping Ayase, he just can't help himself!

Honestly the only worthwhile characters in this are the workers at Someya's okama bar, and even they're kind of a grab bag of transphobia/homophobia, so... basically what I'm saying is that Okane ga Nai is just terrible.

Because like most awful BL it's a total guilty pleasure for me; I thought their dynamic was cute but I recognize that this is because I have creepy taste, and I can't imagine some people think this is objectively good.
