Yeah, I was watching the movie and found myself kind of disappointed that the Turks were slid into the role of comic relief.

I'm okay with the manwhore thing though ;)

According to a Japanese friend of mine, the Turks were portrayed pretty comic relief-y in the Japanese version of the original game. She was surprised to see how "tough and mean" they were in the English version.

Tbh, I prefer the "tough and mean" Turks. Morally ambiguous assholes is so much more fun than stereotypical goofballs.

I don't mind the tough and mean Turks, but I like the comic relief Turks, too. I mean, Rude and Reno were standing around talking about who they had crushes on, I think their characters can accommodate both :)

considering that his sexuality isn't really touched upon, imo it's fandom's right to portray him as promiscuous or not. (though i'm not fond of that portrayal myself, but that's just personal preference and i see why people would put such a good-looking guy with many peopl hurr)
the illiterate part is a bit cringe-worthy though, i agree. he's a turk who's highly regarded despite his slacking and goofing off. he's definitely not illiterate or stupid (imo both are different things but EHH SEMANTICS)

IDK, I like slumkid!Reno... I think he probably CAN read, though. If he can fly a helicopter (I THINK that's canon), then he'd better be able to. But if you are writing him as coming from the slums then it might make sense for him not to be able to read too well until he starts working for ShinRa.

oh, i like the idea of slumkid!reno too! i was mostly talking about his characterization as a turk during the FFVII/AC period. imo while he could have had a hard time reading/writing before shinRa, he should have picked up these skills at least partially while working as a Turk o:

The best characterizations of Reno I've seen make it clear that he's quite intelligent and capable (he's a Turk, after all) but he just doesn't give a shit about anything but his comrades and getting the job done. Which I think is truer to the original game than Advent Children's comic relief.

The promiscuous part I can totally get behind, though. IDK, Reno doesn't seem the type to either deny himself pleasure or commit to any one person.

…Well, not that I necessarily agree with "illiterate" but Reno always did strike me as kind of a doofus, even before AC comic relief, like in the original game when he'd rather talk about who wants to get in whose pants than anything that's actually happening. He also probably isn't the type to give a shit whether he spelled "definitely" right or used the correct their/there/they're in his text messages, which, I can see why it'd lead to those "illiterate" characterizations.

You can be a horny doofus and still be a badass. Just sayin', yo.

Haha, I admit, I have no problem AT ALL with the manwhore aspect of his fandom character, and I have to say I don't mind it if he is portrayed as not having 'book learning' -- but I draw the line if he's not super-competent at his job. I can see him being uninterested in stuff that's not related to doing his job well rather than him being stupid though -- he's really smart (he can fly helicopters! And stuff!), he just only applies it when and where he wants to, and he can get away with doing that because he is so good at his profession XD
