Everyone keeps telling me how good and dark and deep it is, and I really want to give it a try, but the art style is just... Urgh. DX

I've seen some of it and its art design was one of my biggest complaints about it, so you're not alone.

It's really just the character design - much of the animation (mostly in the witch realms) is very vibrant and beautiful, creating a nice contrast with the simplistic, moe characters. Honestly, I hated the character design at first too, but they sort of grew on me.

It's a SERIOUSLY good deconstruction of the genre. The first two episodes are fairly bizarre and creepy but cute (well to a point: notice the Faust quotes thrown on the art *hinthint*), shit hits the fan in episode 3 and continues the grimdark feel.

Everyone whose opinion I appreciate recommends Madoka Magica. I'd love to give it a chance, but after watching 1st episode can't imagine myself feeling anything for so unappealing looking characters (ironic how they chat about beauty in 1st episode.) This series has been compared to Revolutionary Girl Utena, but Utena was "seducing" me even before watching it because of the art.

Buildings and those supernatural scenes looked fine, and while I don't necessarily mind cutesy art styles (why didn't they hire Shoulder-a-coffin-Kuro's artist instead), these girls' eyes look lifeless and their cheek(pouche)s like they're awkwardly full of something unnecessary, same way as pimples or knee effusion. I hesitate to call art style ugly or bad (I love noodle people which bother many others), and wouldn't be embarrassed by liking the series if possible... Does any of you think I'd still have hope with Madoka? ;_; Though girls' love and deconstructions of anime genres I hardly know aren't my greatest interests either, in case they're the main themes?
