A silly hobby? lol

Do you realise that a lot of published works that earn people money are technically fanfiction? A big example would be just about anything published that's based on the Cthulhu mythos.

Some people use fanfic as a way to improve their written language skills, some use it as escapism, some use it as part of social interactions online etc. IMO, deriding it as 'a silly hobby and NOTHING MORE' is, well, silly.

Like everything Gregory Maguire's written, especially Wicked.

I think he has one original, non-fairy tale work.

Yeah, I should have said that MOST of his work is basically glorified fanfic.

He started out as a children's books writer; he has a lot of original books, just lesser known. Which just shows that a writer can do both original and derivative writing and the world doesn't collapse on itself :)

I probably should have said "at least one," which is more what I meant.

Yes! Do write this!

No, seriously. Just wanted to say I agree! =P

No one's stopping you, but what's mind-boggling are the people who post that kind of fic and either:

1. Whine that they're not getting reviews.
2. Use "OMG THIS IS JUST A HOBBY" whenever someone offers them constructive criticism (assuming said concrit is politely worded).

No one's stopping you from writing it, of course, and by all means, in private, write however and whatever is most comfortable for you. What a lot of the wank about badfic hinges on, though, is the fact that if you post your fic, you're doing it for your readers on a level because you want their feedback, so you still have to take it at least a little bit seriously. Perhaps you already do take it a little bit seriously, but I'm just saying when you post your work, you've got to think a bit about your audience as well. Otherwise, you'd be better off just keeping it in your private folder.
