So am I the only one who loves the dark story and thinks the character designs are adorable? I love the shading on their eyes. And their costumes are so cute!

And it contributes to the disconnect as well. I just convinced a couple of friends of mine to watch it, too, so... yeah.

Yeah, I know shit-all about anime, so I have no idea what people dislike about the art style. Means I can just enjoy the damn story in peace.

Doubt it, it's definitely a show fit for hipsters. I'm guessing it's anime purists unable to handle the clash of genres who complain.

Nah, the show is wildly popular. A popular dismissal of the show is that it's not as "deep" as people think it is and it doesn't deserve to be as popular as it actually is. I thought the stereotype of hipsters was that they disliked stuff that was popular and well-known?

I've also never met someone who was an anime "purist" in the sense of not liking a clash of genres. Usually the complaint I hear if that something isn't unique enough. (Although there might be "moe purisits" out there who would have a problem with Madoka, I'm not sure.)

I grew to love their designs~ I might be biased though because I'm so attached to all the characters. :x

I love the eye-shading and the costumes, but I dislike how...WIDE the faces are.

That being said, they look (mostly) fine when animated, and it fits in well with the moe lampooning, so it doesn't bother me too much now that I've actually sat down and watched the show.

It doesn't bother me because I'm used to WIDEFACE lol. Hidamari Sketch, a series with the same artist as Madoka, was very big on /a/. I think wideface is kind of adorable now, haha.
